Language Nerds
Tolkien learned Latin, French, and German from his mother, and studied Middle English, Old English (the language of Beowulf, an epic poem that would help inspire his later works), Finnish, Gothic, Greek, Italian, Old Norse, Spanish, Welsh, and Medieval Welsh. He was also familar with many others, including Swedish, Russian, and Norwegian. His knowledge of language would help him create the Elvish language, which would be used throught his works.

that is an impressive list. particularly the Chinese and Japanese as they are, to my knowledge very different gramatically, not to mention you have a whole different list of symbols to work in.

I'm a native Catalan and Spanish speaker. I speak English, French, half decent Chinese and some Japanese.
My focus right now is to improve my Chinese and Japanese.

hey everyone
for any language nerds who like the celtic or elvish tongues, i started a group for Gaelic. It's aimed at Scots gaelic but if you speak Irish (or to a lesser extent, Welsh) you'd probably follow a lot.

Doing my first semester of Russian :P Didn't think I'd be enjoying it this much! And I kinda know a little Japanese, which I plan to continue studying on my own after I took a semester of that. :D been thinking about a fictional language for a while now, just haven't decided what yet.

I'm just beginning my second year of an English and Spanish undergrad degree with a view to specialising in textual translation one day. I taught myself Japanese for about two years, which didn't go especially well as I'm a rather poor teacher and found it hard to break out of my Romance language comfort zone. My spoken Spanish is, as it always has been, much than my written - so if anybody's looking for a language exchange partner or someone to practise with, I'd be ready and willing, as if nothing else my social anxiety will make me mind my demonstrative pronouns :P

I took two years of German, but had to stop because I moved and my "new" school didn't/doesn't offer it :,(. Yeah, I almost cried. I love German. I am going to minor in German once I get to college, though.

I'm learning spanish at the moment, and I'll continue for the next 3 years in school, I'm also gonna learn latin, for just 6 months:) It would be brilliantly wonderful if you could communicate with some people, in a language, that only you know, something you made up yourself, you could take bits from the languages you know. It's hard to use my own first-language, Danish, because the accent is so different from any other, so if I chose to say; 'My name is Andrea', (saying Andrea with my Danish accent), it would sound weird. 'Me llamo Andrea', is the same, so it wouldn't sound like a 'fluent' language, if you mixed it with other languages ;)
