I'm Sarah. I like discussing books. let me know if you'd like to talk about books. If I've read it we can talk about it if not we can recommend books!

So I just finished The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and I absolutely loved it. But one part that confused me was at the end. So did his aunt molest him when he was a kid, or did I miss something?

(This isn't to suggest that watching Alex's videos will corrupt your soul and turn you into some kind of monster - far from it! :P But the point about an artist's life being reflected in their work is still a valid one, I think)

I find the whole idea of a work of art being the product of the artist who created it a really fascinating idea. Basil's reluctance to show the picture publically because there is too much of himself in it shows just how much a painting can say about a person.

This idea is kind of touched upon in Alex's video in that, as he says, 'all art is a product of the person who lives it.'

I just flicked through the book quickly because I haven't read it in quite a long time, and stumbled across the bit where he says 'How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful. But this picture will remain always young... If it were I who was to be always young, and the picture that was to grow old! For that - for that - I would give everything... I would give my soul for that!'

This reminds me a bit of Dr Faustus, as Dorian almost seems to give up his soul to revel in the frivolities of a superhuman lifestyle, but gives his soul up for art instead of the Devil. I guess Faustus does so of his own accord though, whereas Dorian is more corrupted by the influence of Lord Henry in his fall from grace... Just some thoughts anyway :)

Sorry for the long post, DFTBA!

I just joined, yaaay!

Also, I see you are discussing Dorian Gray.  I should probably give the guy a second chance, but the first time I read it I was a sophomore in high school and I was on this feminist kick.  Which means I seriously DID NOT LIKE IT.  The only thing I can remember completely is how women were basically hated, and the only good woman was the one who died.  I much, much preferred Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest.  Favorite play EVER.  (was this a too-long wall post?)

Kira, I absolutely loved Dorian Gray - I found it pretty creepy and incredibly well-written, though many of the characters are rather unpleasant. I'd definitely recommend it!

Just bought 10 books for 9 dollars. I thin that's a pretty good deal :)

I think A Picture of Dorian Grey is something I need to read.

Just got a download of The Great Gatsby (Yay for books in the public domain!) and I'm looking forward to reading it. I'm sure however I find it that John will manage to make it seem fascinating :D
