Is it better to plan ahead when writing or to just jump into it without prior planning? 26 Replies

Whoa, Emily, that's a great idea, with the pictures!  I'll have to keep that in mind.

I wrote one of my favourite characters that I've ever created last NaNo, but I had to kill her right before the end of the book.  And I still sort of hate myself.  I wanted to turn myself in to the police for killing her.  I think that I'll have to resurrect her in another story some other time, because she was just SO GOOD.

My biggest (and only) tip is to write down your ideas when you have them so that in late October, when you realize some planning might be good, you can look through and pick and choose. Having a list of random ideas is also good if you get stuck and want to add something new to shake things up.

I also clip pictures that I like, or that look like they have an interesting story to them, and I sorted through them and saved out any that reminded me of how I wanted my story to feel.I think having them to remind me of my stylistic aims helped me to not loose the thread of where I wanted to go.

@jennie rae urban

that how i feel with my charters, oh man im completely screwed for NaNo this year.

It's still early in the year - I don't know what I'll write about next November, either.  I'm still recovering from last NaNo!  I didn't actually decide what I was going to do until October.  A tip: don't get too attached to your story and characters.  Because chances are you'll hate each other by the end of the month.

I have a feeling I may make it only two weeks this year :/

I go on a huge school marching band trip at the end of november every year and that would be almost 4 days of no writing except for the bus rides there and back. That doesn't mean I'm not gonna try though : )

except I have no idea what I could write about....

Just this last year.  I tried the year before, but I didn't do any of the things that I suggested just now, and I failed out after about a week.  :)

Jennie, How many Nanos have you done?

Comment by Jennie Rae Urban on March 7, 2011 at 8:12pm
Annie, I planned meticulously for all of October, and if it weren't for that, I wouldn't have finished.  I'd like to get at least one more NaNo under my belt before I even attempt the seat-of-your-pants approach.

Thanks! (I'm going to the Nano site right now :D )

Does anyone here make outlines before they start? (was reading site and found out it's ok to make an outline?)
