Nerdfighters

my social studies teacher would rant on and on about how trying to make peace with the muslims is not that good of an idea: he said they were "violent, primitive people, who undrstand strength. we can't talk to them, we must show our power." now that school's out, i've started to think about that: why do they have to be our constant enemy? why is it that they must be our enemy? with the "election" in iran, this could be a wonderful opportunity for us to make peace with them,if ahmadinejad is not re-elected. but it is not as simple as that: iran is one of those countries that has a civil war every time they switch leaders. with a new iranian leader, that would be safer for the U.S. with less of a risk of a nuclear war. but i do believe that if this nuclear bomb "tests" continue with iran or north korea, we could have ANOTHER war on our hands, ruining the economy. lately we have been reaching out to pakistan, which is nice, but shouldn't their leader be helping them? isn't that there own problem? and since we are planning on reaching out to them, when would be the appropriate time? after our economy has been rescued? after we are at peace with the middle east? obama believes that as a nation, we need to be educated more on islam. that is true, because whenever a muslim woman enters a supermarket, people stare at her.some people think all muslims are bad muslims when they're not. it's the shi'ite extremeists. i think he is trying to reach out to the muslims to much.

What does that mean, "trying to reach out to the muslims too much"? In a global society, our 2 basic options are diplomacy and war - which would you prefer?

Lots of people make the mistake of thinking all (or even most) muslims think and act the same. They don't - they're individuals, just like us in non-muslim countries. People who are muslim have as many opinions, beliefs and actions as the rest of us non-muslims do.

As an experiment, try this for a few days: whenever you think or talk about muslims, also think the same thing about christians. Is peace with christians a good or bad idea? Is the US reaching out to christians too much, or should we wait to have a dialog with christians until our economy is better? Do people stop and stare at christians in the store? Why or why not? What would the world be like if there were no christian countries - would there be peace?

You get the idea. Grouping people solely by their religion doesn't provide a great deal of political understanding. Hopefully, you'll get some good insights into this issue, and see the world and these controversies in a better light.

they are misunderstood, which is why obama believes americans should be educated on the subject more

by "reaching out to much" i mean that help is good to a certain extent, but their country's leader should step in after a while, because we have our own country to worry about. i'll make an analogy: let's say a classmate of yours (assuming you go to school) drops his/her books in the hallway, and there were a lot of them. there is 1 minute left in the passing period, so you gather their books in a pile, but then you must leave and get to class. this is how it is. we can only help them a little

by "Muslims" i meant the middle east area in general, but specifically the islamic people, as president obama wants to reach out to them

Your post seems very bipolar.....o.O

At first, you seem to be saying you don't like how your teacher is discriminating against Muslims (which should be seriously looked into. Having a racist teacher isn't a very good idea) and later in your post, you seem to be discriminating against Muslims as well.....could you possibly clarify your position a tad?

he is not racist, nor is he pro-muslim. he was just one of those anti-politically correct "let them worry about their problems, it's none of our buisiness people" as far as my position goes, we do need to reach out to them, but if they do not want our help, or if it gets to the point where dimplomacy is not enough and their leader must step in, then we need to stop.

Ah, alright then. That makes a lot more sense.

What I see as the problem is America's past need to "Spread Democracy" that resulted in the Cold War. This then made it essential for for the U.S. to enter the middle-east after the USSR had invaded Afghanistan. Our military then pulled out, leaving behind a mess of a country unable to defend itself against militia's supplied and trained by our very own country. I believe that the current crisis in Afghanistan is a result of this major mistake and that our government is trying to remedy the situation, seeing as it is our fault.
