Its all fine saying what we'd like those countries to be like. Of course we don't want them to be as they are. But that's not happening anytime soon quite obviously. I was merely pointing out that you can't just constantly slate the Soviet Union because it was better then those countries are now.

And yeah, the health care in Cuba is still better than the one in the US. Which goes to show just how amazing it would be without the blockade.
'Sicko' directed by Michael Moore is an really good look at the healthcare in the US and also in Cuba. It really gives you a good perspective on how bad it is for some in the US, the richest and most powerful country in the world.

Did you know that after Hurricane Katrina, Cuba got a large number of their medical staff together, I think it was a couple hundred, and had them ready to go to the States to help the victims. But America refused. How sick is that?

as far as i know even with the blockade cuba is still doing better than the US in healthcar. i find this mindbogling.
as for increasing standards of living through free market even in liberal democracies, are we not all to some extent living well on the backs of slavery and poor working conditions in third world countries?

Okay Bonkononymous, okay, the old, 'Soviet Union was awful and Stalin was an evil bastard' argument. But let me ask you a question. Okay, so, would you rather, the previous Soviet Union- Russia and all the other countries once part of it- to be as they are now, many living in extreme poverty and there being constant war bewteen each other, or as they were during the Soviet Union? When as much as some would LOVE to argue, did NOT actually have any poverty (seriously, check your facts if you think it did. even historians completely against the Soviet Union acknowledge there was no real poverty), practically no illiteracy and one of the best health services in the entire world (you'll find that many of the older, great doctors in many countries, actually trained in the Soviet Union, even if they weren't communists) . I'm not saying the Soviet Union was perfect. Of course it wasn't. No state could be perfect as perfection of course, doesn't exist. The government was corrupt and I by no means agree with the way the government was run. Personally I belive that any officials should be at equal level with the rest of the nation, as this is the true value of communism. There is no need for them to have been elevated above the rest. But I think it's safe to stay, that they were doing a damn well better then, then they are now. The mafia, prostitution, drugs trafficking, sex slave traficking, poverty, illiteracy... all things virtually eradicated in the Soviet Union... are back. Worst then ever before.

And forget about Cuba being supported by the Soviet Union. Would it really hurt anyone, if the USA lifted their blockade on Cuba (which is causing alot of suffering) so they could trade with the rest of the world? But no, because then the big, bad communists might brainwash them into being selfless and giving a crap about anyone else.

And I think we do need a revolution. Because in the end, it's the government that make things happen. The hundreds of troops that Britain are sending to Afghanistan with the thousands of American troops aren't going to be stopped by normal people. Only goverment officials have any power over that. Before the second Gulf War, thousands across Britain flocked to demonstrations against it. Did it work? No. Years later and Iraq is a shell of its former self, thousands of years of history, reduced to rubble and dust. And we had no say on it.

That is why we need a revolution. Because try as we might, we just can't get the goverment to do what we want them to.

Actually, as long as there are rich people and greed, there will be poverty, and there will always be greed.

I can't really say I have a political preference, as I believe that each has a great many benefits if executed correctly, but I also believe that mankind is incapable of enacting any sort of government with absolutely no corruption.

I don't believe revolution is an answer to anything, as that implies there is a switching of power, and power is where the problem lies. As long as there is someone "in charge", that person or group will abuse there power, how ever small the abuse is, to support their ideas and demean their opponents. Until we reach a point were people are ethically perfect, there is not perfect government, so government is not the answer.

Bonkononymous, you may believe what you want, and I will believe what I want. I do not think a gradual step by step policy is the right way to go about it. But neither am I saying that a revolution should, and will happen right now. Yes, I am a communist (if I must brand myself) and I agree almost whole heartedly on much of the teachings of Karl Marx. Right now, we are on the borderline of the 'Bourgeois' stage. True it has taken hundreds, even thousands of years for us to process to this stage. But I believe that with the next jump (which I am sure will happen one day) will take far less time. I won't explain why here, because I doubt it would fit.

And not all revolutionary leaders are tyrants. I would hardly say that anything Fidel Castro did is tyrant-worthy. If it wasn't for the blockade (which in itself is disgusting), then Cuba would be a more than fine right now. In fact, I'm sure it would be an amazing place to live. It was working when they had support from the Soviet Union and if they had been able to keep that support, that imagine what it could be like now. It saddens me that someone as great as Ernesto 'Ché' Guevara gave his life for a better world, and Cuba, his greatest achievement, is falling apart due to the disgusting tactics of the US.

As long as there is capitalism, there will always be poverty.
