Actually what's cool is that there are no laws anywhere in the US that prohibit people from going barefoot anywhere unless the specific establishment has a sign prohibiting barefeet. Also, It's perfectly legal to drive barefoot too!

does anyone else have to deal with people believing old wives tales and giving out to you about being barefoot cos it'll make you sick/you'll catch a cold? etc

In my old school, I used to walk on the turf with my friends and I would go barefoot. In my new school, you get a demerit if you're not wearing shoes.

This morning I kicked off my flipflops and ran across the school football field. While I was gone, someone found my shoes and sent them to the lost and found, so I had to walk across campus barefoot to get them back. Good times.
