Hi, I'm new here....
I've been playing the violin for four years. I'm not as good at it as I'd like to be, but that's to be expected. My school orchestra is really small compared to our band, so it's cool to see that there actually ARE quite a few orchestra nerdfighters. :D

I've been playing the violin for 4 years now so I'm not as good as all of you, but I'm getting there!

I don't know if I count as an orchestra nerdfighter... I've only played with an orchestra like, 3 times in my life! I had to fight to get a strings program at my high school and then there were only 5 of us (2 violins, a viola, me on cello, and a REALLY janky upright bass). I still play cello, but mostly on my own with private instruction. I made a violin in woodshop which resulted in fiddle and mandolin lessons for a year! One day, I'll audition for my uni's orchestra and then I could count myself among the awesome nerdfighters of this group!

Being a violist further inspired me to be a nerd fighter.  It's bad when you're picked on for being in orchestra... during orchestra.  :P

Of course, now I'm happy that I I play/own a viola.  I even named her Nonina.  I've gotten considerably better now that I've worked through all the Suzuki tutorial books.   It's not easy practicing harmony when there's no melody.  Hang in there if you have to learn viola by starting off with orchestra parts.  I don't know how the cellos manage.

I play viola in Minnesota Youth Symphony, this is my first year playing viola but before this I played violin for five years...I'm in Philharmonic.
Viola is cool because of the deep sound you get (unlike the violin's screechy E string) and how you have to understand the whole piece better, not just the melody. I don't know how to play cello or bass yet but I sure would like to... Yeah Orch Dorks!
