The Darkness Within
By Loopy Grumpkins

The night is as black as the hearts of men.
Not a star shows in the sky,
Not an owl hoots its call.
The sky is empty but for the grey clouds
And the waning crescent moon,
Glaring down at the humans in scorn.
The night is desolate.

That which we cannot see is what we fear most.
We all grow to fear the darkness,
But it is not the darkness that gives us
Fear,
But that which lurks in the darkest of
Shadows.
The night is cryptic.

Through the shadowy streets march the lost souls.
An orphan,
A beggar,
An alcoholic,
A third-shift slave worker,
Each bound in his or her own stocks.
The night is cruel.

Impoverished workers toil from dusk until dawn.
Factories belch out smog,
Hazing the towns around them
Just as they gray the lungs of the townsfolk.
Smelting, pounding, assembling:
All done without rest throughout the night.
The night is tyrannical master.

Things no one would dare do by light of day
Occur in deepest night.
Two men burgle an old widow’s home.
The loser of an argument lies lifeless in an alley.
A refugee family is smuggled across the border.
Cults to deities no light dweller knows of meet in the dark places of the world.
The night is perilous.

The dark hours haunt all people,
Even the aristocracy.
Tyrants see the ghosts of all they’ve killed
And tycoons see all the lives they’ve ruined.
Each sits as he cradles his brandy as he gazes into the eyes of despair,
Wondering when his time shall come and if anyone will remember his name.
The night is haunting.

The night is as black as the hearts of men.
Not a star shows in the sky,
Not an innocent makes as sound.
All that is good in the world has retreated into its abode,
Carefully bolting their doors
Against the darkness from within.
The night is man-made.

A.Maze.Ing. Speechless, haven't read anything this good in a while. So stark and honest, and excellent flow as well. Stellar. Running out of adjectives....

This Is For You
By: Colleen Kelly

This is for you,
This is for the years I've admired you,
For the years I've adored you,
And for the years I've never given you a clue,

This is for the year we met and talked,
For the year we laughed and hand-in-hand walked,
This is for the months we have teased each other,
And for the months we've grown closer to one another,

This is for month we changed and drifted apart,
For the month we convened and touched each other's hearts,
This is for the days we have hit each other for no particular reason,
And for the days we have hugged each other for no particular reason,

This is for the day we couldn't stop staring at one another,
For the day we will never remember forever about each other,
This is for the hours I've thought of you,
And for the hours I've dreamt of you,

This is for the minutes I have wanted to believe in love because of you,
For the minutes I hope you're thinking about me, too,
This is for every second I haven't tried to make my dream come true,
And this is for every second I spent writing this for you,
This is for you.

i gave this to my boyfriend a little while ago. . . he bought me a necklace to say thank you. ^^

8 gates
by Mason Machado

though I may be suround by friends

in my mind i seek solitude

the only time I leave the 8 gates

is when I get to be near you

I really like this, actually, a lot. It's short, but it isn't really that simple. Lovely.

"June 24th"

we’re all just waiting for
degree changes and phone calls;

watch garbage men shove it in by the railroad

pick centers from salmon berries, the fluff
off pea pods, the petals from almost-gone
roses all with our stained porcelain fingers

sun isn’t good for fine china, but all the kids are
doing it these days.

“hey, it’s me, just call me back.”

no one ever will because messages come through
during sun breaks, when we all run outside for
just the few moments of overcast magic:

picking up italian phrases that our mothers
maybe shouldn’t translate.

Ripple
By Elaine

Some thing's forming ripples,
waves moving through the very fabric
of the universe
But as I sit here, and listen,
I'm lost, filled with wonder
for something I know naught

Something large, large enough even
to change this world we live on
is heading our way, and these ripples
move on, closer and closer
the whispering of the cloth
that is the universe transforms

I hear it changing, becoming
the rush of the winds, that then
grow stronger yet. And tugging me
along the shore, it changes once more
This time, the roar of the waves
pounds through me, as I drift, slowly, away

And I ponder falling deep
within my mind's depths I struggle
wrestling with a shadowy
and incomprehensible
thing, that eludes my faltering grasp
it twists away, and then, escapes.

one i made on my trip to florida

never felt

he never felt the sun warming up the day
he never felt the wind causing the trees to sway
he never felt the grass on the cliff where he kneeled
he never felt felt the dagger made of such fine steel
he never felt the pain when he slit his guts
he never felt the sword on his neck where it struck
he only felt one thing thoughout this tale
he felt the freedom from his life which was like a jail
