Independent Language Learning 3 Replies

Because of the number of languages I want to learn, it won't be possible to take classes in all of them. As such, I'm all for learning independently. Do you have a favorite software or book for…Continue

If anyone needs help with Spanish, I am fairly proficient. Or at least I'd like to think so, after four years of Spanish class (I'm one of the rare few who take my Spanish and French classes very seriously.) Granted, it is my second language, I can help with the basics. And if anyone here is a native speaker of Spanish, it would be great to have someone to pracitse with. :)

I want to learn many languages. But right now, I'm looking to begin Spanish, probably through Pimsleur. I already have Rosetta's Spanish, and the going is sloooow.

Any advice?

PS: My native tongue is English (American Midwest).

I am studying Spanish, Japanese, and Esperanto at the moment. I speak English natively, and I have a little bit of German.  I'm not fluent in any other language yet, but I'm working on it.

So currently I'm taking Japanese, I learned English as my second language but am fairly profficient in it. I'd love to relearn French, and I'd love to learn Arabic, any help?

Also i'm more than willing to help anyone interested in Japanese, i'm still a student of it, but nonetheless i am a teachers assisstant for the language and will be launching  a Jaanese language website by the end of the year

I know a little German, English is technically my native tongue but I invented my own language so I consider that to be my first language. Want to learn Japanese, Russian, Italian and Hebrew or Arabic, or both! All the languages!!

To Zara: If you're looking for easy, do Spanish. It's a piece of cake if you already know french. Pronunciation is probably easiest of the options (at least it is for a native Engilsh speaker). The only problem is that having both french and spanish you might get mixed up sometimes. But it's also completely doable. I started learning Spanish after two years of learning French, and I also continued with French during that time.

However, just because you think German might be hard doesn'tmean you should shy away from it. That's how I felt about French when I started learning it, and after I got the hang of pronunciation, it was fine. Besides, you now know how to learn a foreign language, so all those weird little things (like three genders) are less confusing to understand. Besides, it might be the most practical of all the languages to learn if you've got family who speaks it.

Personally, I hope to continue with French and Spanish next year at uni, in addition to beginning German and/or Polish.

Hi everybody!

I live in England and I'm doing my degree in Modern Languages. I'm learning French for the first half (and I'd say I'm at an intermediate level at the moment-although my listening skills aren't too groovy). I also have to choose either English, Spanish or German to complete the second half of my degree, but I can't decide which.

English is obviously my native language, but I imagine the exams to be more difficult, German, in my opinion, is a tough language to learn (although many of my relatives live in Austria -so it would be handy to know) and I've never learnt Spanish before.

Anybody got ideas what I should go for?
