Any great teaching tools?

I thought I would start a post to keep any neat teaching tools that we come across.  I know that I am always looking for something to spice up a lesson. I put some of my favorites below. Blabberize-…Continue

What do you teach? 3 Replies

I was inspired to ask this by Kim Mecir's comment in which she mentioned what she teaches but I don't know why one of us didn't think of it sooner! I'm sure some (most? all?) of us have mentioned…Continue

Hi folks. I'm Tim and I was teaching social studies for 2 years but am finishing my Masters full time this years. I don't know if anyone can use this but I'm in the middle of producing a 10-part "animated" Global History (first half) review. Here's a link to latest episode, World History - Ep. #4 . If anyone can use it, please feel free.

This is year 6 for me and I agree all the negative things you mentioned are accurate.  But also I can't imagine doing anything else.  There is nothing more rewarding than seeing my students fall in love with a book or feel empowered by their own writing.

Hi Amanda, and welcome! I'm in my 8th year of teaching. Yes, I work long hours with little pay, and yes, it's stressful. But I love my job - like, jump-up-and-down-in-my-chair, can't-control-myself love it. Really. :-) Watching kids actually enjoy learning, hearing the genuine "Oh!" when they get something for the first time, and creating new Nerdfighters - It is so worth it.

Does anyone know any good icebreaker activities? I start tutoring tomorrow, and I want to have little icebreakers everyday before we start our lesson. It's just going to be me, my student, and another tutor helping me.

Hello, everybody! I'm rather new to this whole site, but I thought this group would be a good way to meet interesting people. I am 25, and have just returned to school (Immaculata University) to finish my English degree and become certified to teach Secondary Ed. I really want to meet others who are doing interesting things in their classrooms so that I can become the best teacher possible!

I just made a loan to a woman from Nicaragua who is a teacher.  If interested here is the link to her loan. http://www.kiva.org/lend/458602

Androo, I haven't read that book of his, but for one of my classes, we were assigned another one of his books, Teachers as Cultural Workers, which was really interesting.

Hey Androo, I am on my 5th year of teaching middle school ELA. I can't believe it, how time flies. The cooperating teacher relationship can be really tricky, hang in there.

My best success using the Giver was having the kids write "wonder questions" about each chapter. The book is a stretch for kids of this age group who are just developing abstract thinking. Wonder questions push them into that in a simple format. Then we would share them out, "I wonder..."  ...i.e. I wonder what Jonas's job will be? I wonder why planes aren't allowed to fly over the community?

I don't teach whole-class novels anymore, but if I still taught the Giver I would totally tie in Hunger Games, especially with the movie coming out!

Hehe, did you ask for advice? :) I gave it anyway!

@Androo, I all the levels of sophomore biology from the honors kids to the conceptual class.  I had a similar co-op. He would only let me lecture, which really isn't me at all.  He had some good organizational ideas though. The Giver is a great book, but then again I've always liked novels about dystopia.  I have not read the Pedagogy of the Oppressed but it sounds interesting. I might just add it to my reading list.
