Okay, so this is mostly about the movies: I noticed the Man of Steel is coming out soon. Then I read an article about this and I was like... wow, they're right--What HAS DC done recently, besides Nolan's Batman? I mean, Green Lantern was mostly a flop. Superman Returns was just bad. But Marvel's been cranking out Thor, Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, X-Men, and since the year 2000, we've had two separate reboots of the Spiderman franchise (I count Amazing Spiderman along with the original trilogy). And now we've got Avengers, which shattered basically ever box office record ever, including lots of ones held by great movies Harry Potter, Titanic, and Avatar.
I happen to like Green Lantern, and in my opinion, if you're looking for classic superheroes, you can't get much more classic than Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, etc. But honestly. Marvel has done so much more with their characters that I'd say I'm really more of a Marvel Girl (see what I did there?) now. Can DC EVER be as awesome as Marvel has become? What do you guys think?

Permalink Reply by Adam Martin on July 5, 2012 at 11:36am As a big DC fan I wish DC would pull there finger out on this, they seem to be playing things too safe. They just hide behind Batman all the time (Seriously, there are about 5 on going batman comics at the moment, not including the ones about the rest of the batfamily).
They seem to do better with TV shows, dating back to Batman in the 1960's, with things like Smallville and many animated shows like batman the animated series (see, more batman) and more recently Young Justice. But Marvel has been catching up in that department with my favourites being Avengers: Earth's mightiest heroes and Spectacular spider-man (Pity both of these have been cancelled).
DC seems to bring out more Animated movies than big profile live action ones (which I often prefer, In my opinion Green Lantern: emerald knights was better than the live action one, but I enjoyed both) but even as a fan of both DC and animation there are still ones coming out that I don't hear about until after their release, they just sort of sneak out unnoticed without much hype or promotion.
They do seem to be making a push in the TV department with DC nation and the upcoming Arrow TV series and I've heard rumours about a Booster Gold TV movie on the Syfy channel (syfy because poor literacy is cool) but again I think they might be playing too safe after the Aquaman tv movie went unnoticed (I haven't seen it and I'm a big aquaman fan) but it got 7.4 on IMDB which is quite respectable but obviously didn't bring in the big buck and the Wonder Woman pilot which failed (and from what I can it, it's probably for the best).
They have many characters I'd love to see on the big screen, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Booster Gold, Blue Beetle and so on, full teams such as the Birds of Prey, Secret six or the Justice Society of America. But I think they're probably going to shy away since many of these characters are unknown by the general public (didn't stop Marvel with things like Thor or Blade)
I really want DC to pull their thumbs out and give us something other than batman (I could go for some Nightwing for a change) but chances are by the time they get their act together and actually start making movies like Marvel is it will be too late and superhero movies will be old news and the world will have found a new crazy.
Permalink Reply by Kayla on July 5, 2012 at 8:05pm Wow, I totally forgot about TV shows when I was writing this! I read in the article as well that there have been several attempts to start a Wonder Woman franchise of sorts, and even some hints at a Justice League movie, but it sounded as though they were all scrapped in the early stages, which is a shame.
The thing with the movies is, now that I think about it, I didn't know a whole lot of Marvel characters before Avengers: Now I'm actively going out to try and learn more about them, maybe even track down some comics if I can. These movies showcased their, that is to say Marvel's, strengths; and you're right, if DC doesn't start showcasing soon, it'll be too late and they'll just fade into the background, which sucks, because they DO have some genuinely cool superheroes.
Permalink Reply by Adam Martin on July 6, 2012 at 4:59pm Who are some of the heroes you'd like to see movies of? For either DC or Marvel.
I've already mentioned some I'd like for DC. For Marvel, Ant-man and the Wasp, I was actually really disappointed when I heard they wouldn't be in the Avengers. Also, my favourite team, X-Factor. We've already seen a young Havok in First Class, and Jamie Madrox was in X-men the last stand but it was little more than a cameo. I want to see Banshee and Wolfsbane kicking ass.

nightwing
teen titans, with dick grayson as night wing
Permalink Reply by Kayla on July 6, 2012 at 5:19pm Replying to your comment while also referencing Adam Desseyn: Definitely Static Shock! I remember that cartoon from when I was younger--awesome. I'm also a fan of the Teen Titans, also having seen the cartoon when I was younger. Definitely Wonder Woman, who I think doesn't get enough credit, more of Daredevil from Marvel, and honestly, I think it'd be kinda cool to see a Justice League movie. Otherwise, I do like Antman and Wasp. They were in the original Avengers, but they didn't show up much in the film--from the film, I would've liked to see more of Black Widow and Hawkeye, for sure, but I feel like they kind of got overshadowed by Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, and the Cap.
I do kind of like Aquaman for a rather (in my opinion) dumb reason--HE'S a swimmer, I'M a swimmer. (Yeah, it's stupid, what can I say?) But I don't know if he's big enough to make a full film out of. Otherwise, I'm still a fan of Flash
And yes, Adam Desseyn, it'd be cool to see Lantern with Green Arrow. Where'd you hear about Green Arrow being in production?
Permalink Reply by Adam Martin on July 6, 2012 at 5:26pm There already was a Daredevil film, I can't remember if it did well but I like it.
I could go into full on essays about how awesome Aquaman is. I don't know if he's big enough either but then again, I didn't think Thor was big enough for his own movie. Everyone knows the name Aquaman, they just think he's a joke thanks to the poor writing of the superfriend show.
Wonder woman is great and, I feel there's a lot of story potential there too. The current run of wonder woman is great, Cliff Cheang's art is fantastic
Permalink Reply by Kayla on July 8, 2012 at 8:01am There was a Daredevil movie? I never knew that. Cool! Good point about Thor: Well, I guess if he can do it, so can Aquaman! :) (And speaking of poor writing that turns something into a joke--may I point you in the direction of The Last Airbender movie? I cringed every time they opened their mouths. It's all it takes to screw up a character.)
@Adam Desseyn. Nice! Seems like it might be awhile before we see anything big for it, though... Still, it's cool that they're getting the Arrow out there.
Permalink Reply by Desperado (Adam) on July 8, 2012 at 9:11am not to mention, they're launching a tv series called Arrow this fall on CWTV. I will catch every episode live, then rewatch the entire series a new one comes out.
