I never really liked the taste of any meat (which seams to run in my family) so it only took one pamplet from PETA a friend gave me to make me quite cold turkey (so to speak). I've almost gone full vegan with the exception of cheese and yogurt. Been going strong with no second thoughts for about 7 months now.

That's called pescatarian (sp?). Which is still better than omnivore :D
Maybe there's some kind of vitamin/supplement that can help?

Thanks Janet and Nephtys80. I heard gelatin strengthens nails so there's probably nothing those companies will do. I went to CVS though and found a small bottle of "green" polish remover that doesn't have acetone or gelatin. It works well too.

Trina- There's nothing you could have done in those situations. Like Nephtys80 said, the idea is to use as little as possible. It's way too difficult to avoid animal products altogether. I know, for me at least, being vegetarian is an extended learning experience. I feel like a dunce every time I find out things like gelatin and whey are not vegan. (I was under the impression for a LONG time that whey and wheat were similar things.) Basically, if it's not willful, learn from the experience and don't stress over it.

This group makes my soul smile. :)
I've been vegetarian for three years, more out of concern for my health than ethical reasons. I absolutely love finding creative ways to make foods vege-friendly, and even got my boyfriend (an omni) to agree that our food IS good and doesn't taste like cardboard. Of course, it's impossible to have a discussion with him about why it's a better lifestyle choice. He always counters with tired arguments backed by no evidence other than his own bias. Oh, well. I love him anyhow. :P

Trina, I wouldn't beat yourself up about it too much, you do what you can, but in a world of eating out and hyper-processed food you have to rely on other people to inform you and have a degree in chemistry to decipher some food labels :) Try and make something good out of the situation: tell the waiter you are upset, so that hopefully he will remember the next time a vegetarian comes in, and write to the producer of the nail polish remover pointing out that their product is not suitable for vegetarians and vegans and asking them whether it's really necessary to use animal products. in fact, post the brand here so that more of us can write in: if enough people complain they might actually change the composition or come up with a cruelty-free line.

PETA has this to say about restaurants:
"When you're out to eat with your friends or parents, and you ask "does this bun have monoglycerides in it?" or "Was this vegan ice cream processed with bone char?!?! OMG!" you're not saving any animals. In fact, you're doing the opposite, because every one sitting around you is thinking to themselves, "Wow, I could never be vegan, that looks hard!"" (...) "Obviously, we're not saying it's OK to go order a cheese pizza or ignore mayo on a sandwich, but c'mon. If the average person thinks to be vegan they have to carry around some kind of ingredient list before they go grocery shopping or sit down to eat at a restaurant, they won't go vegan—and isn't that the point, anyway?

Being vegan isn't about you—it's about the animals and saving as many of them as we can in the short time we have. We want to make veganism seem like the easiest thing in the world (because it is!), not make it seem like it is some elitist club only the pickiest people can be in."
I by no means always agree with PETA, but I think that's quite a good take on the topic.

As to whether it happens to me: quite frequently. My friends cook what they consider to be vegetarian for me, often not realising that most cheeses contain animal rennet. They have just prepared a meal for me with love, so i don't complain and eat it - and then see if I can somehow work the issue into a conversation a few weeks later, without connecting it to the meal they made for me :)

That's pretty amazing that you guys have been vegetarian since birth.

So, I have a question for all you vege nerds. What happens when you unknowingly eat, or use animal? Like when you take a sip of soup and find out it's made with beef(even though we mentioned I didn't eat meat to the waiter, he failed to tell me that soup had beef in it) or you use nail polish remover then find out it has gelatin in it(I didn't realize it at first but then I was in desperate need to get super glue off my fingers)? Has this ever happened to you? What did you do? What are you suppose to do in situations like those? I always feel so guilty when I find out I did this. Like I killed the animal myself.

p.s. next Saturday it'll be my 5 month anniversary of being vegetarian. I someday hope to become full vegan, like when I go to college next fall.
