Lets keep this one simple, do you believe that we have duties that we must perform (Deontology), that consequences should determine morality (Consequentialism, Utilitarianism), or that intention is…Continue

Comment by Shane on November 3, 2011 at 4:09pm Yes, that's pretty much it. Like you said, the first principle has to be outside the body, because otherwise, everything would be living. Thus the defining factor of life, as he calls it, the first principle, is something beyond the material, something that can still move material bodies, which he says the soul is able to do in the same way that heat can warm something without being a material body itself.
The internet is awesome. I love how many places out there make the full text of the Summa readily available.
Comment by Brianna Marie on November 3, 2011 at 3:47pm It is Question 75: Of man who is composed of a spiritual and a corporeal substance... Article 1: Whether the soul is a body.
I'm kind of confused as to why Aquinas thinks the soul is immaterial. He gives the argument that the first principle of life having to be immaterial because otherwise everything made of matter would be alive... Is that the answer?
Comment by Shane on November 3, 2011 at 3:17pm I don't have my copy of the Summa with me - are you sure he says it's not a body and not the body? Probably just wishful thinking, because that would be quite a bit easier...
Where exactly does he say this? I can look for the text on the internet and read more into it. I imagine that you're right: the soul is not a physical body, and therefore is immaterial.
