How did the economic depression affect Britain exactly? What exactly are the

cuts and austerity measures exactly? Do you think that maybe these things might help Britain's economy in the long run?

Here in my country, we had a while back a huge wave of protests which were originally about the (relatively recent) high rising house prices but that soon became about more basic and fundamental problems in our economy. Is it like that in Britain, or are the protests specifically about recent government decisions of austerity and public sector cuts?

Something big that's happening in Britain is on november 30th, it's the day of a general strike, meaning a lot of public sector workers, especially those represented by trade unions are on strike that day, there will be picket lines up and down the country, and marches in solidarity with the workers, I'm not unionised (yet, I'm going to join one soon), but I'll be going to a march to show my support.

The strike is protesting the massive public sector cuts and other austerity measures here in Britain, and is quite closely tied to the occupy movement, there's been a lot of actions like this recently in Britain, I feel like something big is going to be happen. Personally, I think it's good to be a part of history like this, and I really support the protests and actions

I haven't had time to watch the news lately but I'm planning to update on news events happening in the region and locally so that there might be some discussions and activity here.I'm just sending this message to you guys to ask if you want to post here about any current events in your countries or something? What's going on where you live and why is it/isn't it a big deal? I know there're all those occupy movements.....and maybe there are other stuff you'd like to talk about or rail about. So let's get the group buzzing :)

First, Robert, I suggest you start a new thread or something and describe exactly how the educational system in your country works? What portion of the government budget does it receive? Why was it's budget cut (is it because of a general budget cut or are there other things that needed a larger budget like security)? Is this a problem of the entire US or just your state, or is it a global western problem? etc. Because I have no idea what you're talking about.

Second, I've been on vacation for a while and only recently returned. So I'm only now mentioning it: I saw Gilad Shalit return! I saw it on the news and he's actually alive! The interview with the Egyptian journalist was another torture for him, you could see it! But his answers were so intelligent and diplomatic.
