I was really, incredibly sad... but it had been spoiled for me, so it wasn't as much of a terrible shock. It has, however, been weird and difficult. I had a friend try to commit suicide that evening (I don't think she's a House fan, so not likely t…

Profile Information

What Kind of Nerdfighter Are You?
I am a music-and-writing nerdfighter, in that I live to listen to and perform music, to write stories and poetry and essays, and to write music. Amateur titles include Cooking/Baking Nerdfighter, Gardening Nerdfighter, and Traditional Blacksmithing Nerdfighter. *Edit to add: Erika the Obsessor insists that my obsession, skills, and overpowering nerdiness about music theory grants me the title Music Theory Nerdfighter as a sort of sub-specialty.
About Me:
I am a college student attempting to get a Music Education degree in four years... *shudder* I Iove to read. I have a long history of science Nerfighterness in my childhood, but since my time is limited, my science involvement tends to be more about science fiction these days. I am creative and inquisitive and always trying to do too many things at once (I add Kitchen Nerdfighter, Garden Nerdfighter, and Traditional Blacksmithing Nerdfighter to the list of things I'm trying to pick up.)
Favorite Books, Movies, Music, and more
Oh wow... My two most influential authors, right off the top of my head, are Orson Scott Card and Robert A. Heinlein. My English Class Books (ie, stuff I was assigned to read that I fell in love with) are A Secret History by Donna Tidd, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, and The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Other authors that I always look for more of: Robin McKinley, Tamora Pierce, Dennis LeHane, Laurell K. Hamilton, R. A. Salvatore, and recently Dean Koontz. Lots of others. I devour libraries.
What's your favorite thing to put on your head?
I like to hide under blankets...
If you could do your happy dance with anyone who would it be with?
My People: girlfriend, sister, two best friends.
When did you start watching B20

My Own Paper Towns Fairy Tale

>"Once upon a time..."

>Okay, no. I was really tempted to write this entire story as a mockumentary about the mail system in general, but I decided that I like my own voice and I'm going to stick with it. And so it goes...

>I, like most of the other people in the world who know what DFTBA means, have been waiting and waiting and waiting for October 16th. No, not for Fall Break (although that was an incredibly exciting thing to wait for- yay trips home!). But, before I even knew that t… Continue

The Nerdfighter Phenomenon in the News!

Imagine my surprise when my mother sends me a link to one of our mutual favorite columnists and this week's topic on Suburban Fringe is about how the nerds are covering America and it's a happy happy thing... so a little late from the St. Louis Today website: The Nerding of America

Home Sweet Home

As of yesterday, I've been home two weeks, and I'm still not quite sure what to think. I love being with my family and friends all the time in ways that can't really be expressed in words. I love sleeping in my own bed and showering without shoes on my feet. I love actually knowing what streets are around me in a way that I never quite managed in my college town, being able to drive around with a mental map that extends in detail for miles around me. But I don't quite fit back in my Caitl… Continue

Matters of Belief

My mother, in a phone conversation, gives me an emotional "prescription" to listen to the song "Don't Stop Believing"... and then I log on and find just that video as the top post. Coincidence? I tend to believe not. I need to trust in these little things that make me smile, because it's harder and harder for me to trust in anything good in this world. I'm getting screwed between the symphony directors, the health center, and my ever-fragile hands, and as horrible as that is, it only sets off wh… Continue

Finding the Shiny Days

***Right now, the air is thick with irony... or more literally, thick with the snowflakes flying past my window as I pack to leave for "Spring" Break. Is this winter ever going to end? Someday. For now, I'm looking forward to hiking through this on Sunday with my Nerdfighter-in-training sister, and being home for a week, and taking a break with my hands.

***But despite the snow, I'm happy. I've got my fledgeling ska station on Pandora going, I just packed a mountain of dirty laundry into… Continue

Hi again Caitlin!

I just read a WONDERFUL article about Oliver Sacks and Musicophilia and I thought that, as a music student, you might enjoy it!

Music is amazing, and so is science, and there are strong connections!

Thanks! We named our two Platys "Walker" and "Texas Ranger" but I guess we should have named them "Dr. Quinn" and "Medicine Woman" *snort* tee hee giggle snort haahahaha.

Okay, I loved Talladega Nights and I love Will Farrell. He's an even bigger dork than I am, possibly, and he makes a living at it!! yay!!!

OH, and I almost forgot - do you know the Ani Difranco song, "Little Plastic Castle"? It's one of my favorite songs EVER and it is a metaphor for that moment of discovery and joy when we find love, like the goldfish swimming around and around the bowl and being surprised each time at the little plastic castle :-)

You have to check it out if you don't already have it!

Hi again Caitlin - I've been meaning to upload a pic of my aquarium since I first talked to you - coming soon, fish for the Farther Away...

I had a funny experience with them - I had this aquarium I had gotten for free on FreeCycle (I love them!) that I used for a terrarium in my classroom, and after school was over I thought, I wonder if it holds water? So I checked, it did, and I thought I would just throw a couple of goldfish in there for fun.

A few hundred dollars later... I had my little free 10 gallon aquarium quite tricked out! Coral, formations, a treasure chest... and I didn't get goldfish, I got a couple of Platys, and apparently they were pregnant... Platys are live bearers and pretty soon it was like "the miracle of life" right there in my living room!! It was amazing!! These adorable teeny tiny little fish that I could just spend hours watching hide in the gravel and plants - I felt like a mom worried about her preemie...

Then, they had more. And more. and more... omg. My fish population was rapidly outgrowing my free aquarium!! Enough miracle of life already! ha.

So I found a good home for them - a guy and his girlfriend came over with buckets and bags and an ice chest and carefully transferred all the little fishies and decor and gravel and even water so they wouldn't shock them, and all my supplies, and took them home. He was so nice - he emailed me a week or so later just to let me know they were doing great!

Anyway, pics coming soon :-)
