What Kind of Nerdfighter Are You?

About Me:
What do I love besides Nerdfighters and decreasing world suck? Old books which I collect when I find a beautiful one I can't pass up that I can afford. I have a very eclectic taste in music -- enjoying just about everything except for the following: 1) experimental caucophonies such as the trombone concert I heard at a jazz festival in Europe (OMG it was the absolute worst and it lasted > 2 hrs), 2) twangy ueber-patriotic country stuff that is very one-sided in its point of view, and 3) sappy mind-numbing elevator music. I especially love acoustic guitar, singer-songwriters, piano, cello, French horns (the mellow of the cello with the kick-ass of the brass), sensual Middle Eastern stuff, and funk like Parliament ("Get up the Funk"). I love thought-provoking movies like the strange one I just saw about a 14,000 year old caveman who was a modern-day professor and also knew the Buddha; practicing my German when I'm not too embarrassed at having "verlernt" it all; Happy Dancing when no one's looking or at least no one's laughing; riding my bike fast; doing yoga and feeling my body working; the ethos I find here in Portland, OR about the environment, sustainability, and livability; places like my church where you are encouraged to learn and to think critically and to figure out what you really believe in as well as what your convictions are, all while working to help make this world a better place. BTW, I'm a UU.

Important people in my life? My daughter who has the best sense of humor and facial expressions and who cracks me up all the time; my new hubby who is good and kind, generous and demonstrative, very NERDY and now bearded (per my request) and -- oh yeah, very attractive -- that no other girls would go out with but who now (after a little cleaning up by moi) is now turning girls heads all over the place (ha! I got him first!!!), my mom who is the best in every way except for worrying too much, the "beaches" with whom I have a longstanding tradition of going to the Sylvia Beach Hotel (a place for true booklovers) on the OR coast for Memorial Day weekend; my long time friends in Berkeley, Tucson, Berlin, Amsterdam and elsewhere whom I never get to see any more; and all of the mentors in my life.

Strange things about me? I'm cursed with an editor's eye so that when I'm just reading the paper and I see a typo I have to get a pen and correct it (a little OCD are we?). I love "little words" (as my husband calls them as he gave them to me for Christmas) to the point of annoyance to my family. These are words so tiny you need a magnifying glass to read them. They are, of course, in the full edition version of the Oxford English Dictionary in 2 volumes, complete with its own case and magnifying glass.

My hopes and dreams? I wish I had my piano with me so I could play at 1am in the morning with all the lights out and the windows open on a summer's eve or all snug and cozy on a cold winter's night. I would like to experience blue snow again (lit by moonlight), start singing on a more formal basis again as I've gotten rusty, wish I weren't allergic to milk but am kind of glad at the same time for health reasons...(does that make sense?). I sometimes have those weird moments when I don't know how to spell "milk" and other such everyday words.

Okay, enough about me -- how about you?!?
Favorite Books, Movies, Music, and more
"Possession" by A.S. Byatt; "The Little Prince" by Antoine de St Exupery, "His Dark Materials" series by Philip Pullman; "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak; "Sixpense House: Lost in a Town of Books," "Used & Rare," and "Slightly Chipped: A Footnote in Booklore" and all such books about the hunt for great antiquarian books; "The Professor and the Madman" about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary; all limerick books by Spike Mulligan; "Einstein's Dreams," and way too many others to really say I have a favorite. I mean, how can you ask a question like that?!??

Currently on my nightstand (and actually being read) "And Only to Deceive" by Tasha Alexander, "The Geographer's Library" by Jon Fasman; "Fierce Conversations" by Susan Scott; "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova.

Just finished "The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana" by Umberto Eco.
What's your favorite thing to put on your head?
strange hats - especially the "Easter bonnet" I made some years ago
If you could do your happy dance with anyone who would it be with?
my daughter since my husband steadfastly refuses until he has "lessons"
When did you start watching B20
September

good luck with the south. i can,t understand them half the time. though most germany is a dialect area. the way people speak in movies only happens around hannover( can't remember how many n's). and among the upper classes.
in school we where punished for speaking dialect. i love that in english films,tv and books people speak dialekt. how old are you and your daughter?

Sorry Christy,

I have been living on a planet called "no life" lately. I just cut back at work so I could have some more time to answer emails.
Actually, I cut back on work so I could spend time with my kids, but between school and naps I can answer emails.
That picture is of my youngest. I think is works for me because people think I am a baby machine. They keep asking me when number 5 is coming.

Sorry it took me more than a month to respond to your question about the rest of the sign, I have been away awhile. Anyway, I don't know what else the sign says, I got it from someone, who got it from someone... I have no idea where it is from.

Check out the new video I uploaded for my recently released book Chess Rumble. This is the closest I've been to filmmaking in a while...

Hey. Been awhile. I was searching through YouTube with you in mind and found some stuff in "deutsches Fernsehen". Snipppets from old Tagesschauen. Blasts from the past. But later on this ningthing a link took me to "TheBalloonProject" on YouTube. You should search that title and then look at the videos Berlin, Chasing & Getting the Camera Back. Bird's eye views of Berlin and a little bit of bicycle chase. And I've got to ask you. When I was living in Germany in '72 was it?, I saw the most amazing thing on TV. "Das Millionen Spiel." Did you ever see that? It's one of the best things I've ever seen on TV. It was a "game show" where the contestants were 1. the victim and 2. the hunters. If the victim survives, he gets the money, if not the hunters do. And it was so realisticaly done that it raised this huge response from the public that thought it was real. Most abhorred the violence but there were significant numbers that wanted to be the next contestants -- both victim and hunters. Did you ever see this thing? I wonder if we can get it somewhere. It was amazing.
