I thought about this question of who my favorite HP character is a great deal. Initially I agreed with you that Luna was my favorite character. She is intelligent and thoughtful and brave. But she is also effervescent...she is seemingly all alone in her open minded world and completely ok with that. Now that is commendable but hard for me to relate to.
So I thought to maybe rethink my opinion. While it is true that Luna is still a close second, I think my favorite is actually Hagrid. Hagrid is a powerful character who overcomes great obstacles (facing the torture of being in azkaban as well as living long after his friends who were killed when he was younger by the Death Eaters) and is fiercely devoted to those he loves. He is a lover of all creatures and has a very open mind. Brave, cathartic, understanding, and harry are also words that describe him. Finally, although he is half giant, he seems a bit more real to me than Luna. I can quite easily imagine a real person with hagrid-esque qualities, but Luna seems all too much a character rather than a person.
