What Kind of Nerdfighter Are You?
About Me:
I earned a B.A. in Politics with a minor in History in May 2008 (I wrote a forty-plus page thesis comparing Stoicism and Utilitarianism). I took two years off to apply for a higher degree, working as a para-educator in a special education classroom whilst doing so. I am now a second-year political science graduate student at Purdue University (GO BOILERMAKERS!!!). I'm pretty open and like learning and hearing about any and everything, but politics and civil rights are big passions of mine. I have eclectic tastes, as demonstrated by my playlist. I like debate, but only when it's productive and civil and about the ideas and not the people. I hate cancer. I'm Native American, although I don't look it upon first glance because my hair and skin are light. Uh... I really dislike these "about me" sort of things... My blog is just that, a blog, so if you don't agree with what I say, that's fine, just don't be a jerk about it; and also keep in mind that it's sometimes written in the throws of emotion or in the midst of a long thought, so if I ramble or rant, and if that bothers you, don't read. Otherwise, comment and what-have-you as much as you like.
Favorite Books, Movies, Music, and more
I guess I'll list some (and in no particular order): The Last Unicorn (Peter S. Beagle); White Mare's Daughter (Judith Tarr); Sabriel (Garth Nix-- and the others weren't as good); His Dark Materials series (Phillip Pullman); The Odessey and Iliad (Homer); Histories (Heroditus); The Twelve Caesars (Suetonius); Meditations (Marcus Aurelius); Second Treatise on Government (John Locke); Utilitarianism and On Liberty (John Stuart Mill); The Belgariad and The Malloreon (David Eddings); Limbo (Alfred Lubrano); The Stranger (Albert Camus); The Crooked Timber of Humanity and Four Essays (Isaiah Berlin); Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal (Christopher Moore); The Raven King trilogy by Stephen Lawhead; and yeah... lots lots more.

Serenity, Courage, and Grace- P4A-inspired

I haven't blogged in forever, but I thought I'd post something now.

Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

This is my favorite prayer, and I have been saying it a lot lately.

Two movies I'm upset about

As I'm sure you're aware, the 1984 classic film The Karate Kid has been "remade," the "remake" having opened yesterday (it will be after midnight when I finish this). There are a number of reasons I'm against this film- reasons which, if they weren't calling it a remake but instead said… Continue

Sum Moar Muzaks

Hey there, loyal readers (as if I have any, HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!)

Since I'm kind of farting around the house a bit before (supposedly) going out with a friend (though I wish it were a date... let's not go there- just fodder for a long, self-centered rant nobody really wants to hear), I…

Movie Quotes IV: The Princess Bride

Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.
-Weseley, The Princess Bride

Another novel-to-screen, but the line itself doesn't really need context to be overthought a bit (just ignore the "Highness" part). And, since this is OVERthinking, expect something a little long, here.

Life isn't necessarily nothing but pain, no, but I think it's unrealistic to expect rainbows and butterflies all the time,…

Obama v. the Supreme Court

Unfortunately, I highly doubt the masses are going to be smart enough to realize he couldn't make them vote how he wanted. And this will be used as ammunition against him. I for one was outraged when I found out about the ruling. I hope what he says here will resonate and impact some of the thick-skulled people that say he's "totally ineffective" and "hasn't done shit" and all that kinda jazz. I hope for it, but I find it rather… Continue

Things are great! I'm not in Grad school, I am still getting my Bachelours. I'm actually postponing Grad school to write. If things go well I'll be an author. My wife is wonderful as always and she is pregnant with our first, so I'm super excited. How are things going with you? How's grad school?

Oh Gabrielle, I've missed you and it seems that I've just missed you again here on the ning. Did you catch that double meaning of the word "miss." Oh I kill myself.

I am very much NOT planning to go to grad school. My friend is in the process of applying and he's having so much stress just from doing that. Also, I've never been a huge fan of going to school, so I really don't want to extend my schooling any further than it's already going to be. I really hope we can find a good amount of Nerdfighters that are at Purdue. I found a few others, but they haven't replied to my comments yet.

I don't know how many of us there are, but there are definitely multiple Nerdfighters here at Purdue. I personally know 3 of them, and I'm hoping to get to know more. So what are you studying? I'm currently a junior in Mechanical Engineering.

Hey. I'm trying to get together a group of Nerdfighters from Purdue who are interested in Humans vs. Zombies. (If you don't know what that is this will inform you: )
If you're interested there's a link to the group at the bottom of the post. If you're not then my friends and I are going to be making a Purdue Nerdfighters group on facebook if you're interested in that.
