SpamBots, Not Just Annoying

When you think about it, a SpamBot is a computer programed to do its best to deceive you into thinking it is another person. Sure, their tendency to spam (hence the name) and their bald manipulations are annoying, but if you think about it a little bit, SpamBots are downright sinister. Their purpose is to blend in with humanity and subvert our decision making. While they may be rather crude in their methods now, who knows what will happen as SpamBots become more elaborate. Are we destined for a…See More

Probably Not

So, I don't blog on the Ning terribly often anymore, much because most of the people with whom I corresponded via blogs don't seem to be on much anymore.  But, since my actions mean that this also applies to me, I feel a bit guilty.  Thusly, I am going to cross-post the following from my personal blog.  Will anyone really bother to read through it, the title expresses my expectation quite well, but I thought the topic was an interesting intersection of math and…

The Problem with Potter

Do not get me wrong, I read all of the Harry Potter books, and enjoyed most of them.  I even watched the first two or three movies.  However, my problem with the Harry Potter series is not with the books themselves, which are adequate, but with the fans.

Specifically, with the pedestal on which the series is occasionally put.  To my mind, what is truly exceptional about Harry Potter is not the story, but the extent to which it captured the hearts and minds of its fans.…

Nothing Lasts Forever

It sometimes feels like once you put something on the Internet, it will last forever.  If you've ever tried to delete your embarrassing Facebook photos, I imagine you know what I'm talking about.  Once I put something on the Internet, I no longer have to trust the frailties of my own memory, I can immortalize my every thought in the bedrock of our society, as though we were young lovers, simply by publishing a blog post.

However, this is a false confidence, a…
