The strangeness of meeting authors

Over ten years ago, I went to a reading by Ursula LeGuin, an author whose work has profoundly influenced my thinking about story, religion, gender, and more. I remember vividly the strangeness of the experience. I had worked intimately with this person's ideas over the course of reading several of her books, and yet, she knew nothing about me. What does one say in that brief encounter when asking the author to sign a book?

I was reminded of that experience when I met John in… Continue

Tagged! Five things about me:

1. I love to knit. I started with small projects to give myself a better chance of finishing them: socks, hats, scarves. I've made myself three very amateur sweaters: two are decent and one was a complete failure. I need to pull it apart and reuse the yarn. I tend to be a fairly selfish knitter, mostly making things for myself. Last year I discovered felting and I love it! Very magical! I've made felted bowls, purses, and a hat.

2. I am involved in way too many organizations: Girl…

HP Alliance podcasts decrease worldsuck

I recently listened to a couple of HP Alliance podcasts, originally released in December. They were on the PotterCast feed, and I finally had a little time to listen to them. The podcasts focused on two causes of worldsuck: the situation in Darfur and the over-consolidation of the U.S. media. If you aren't familiar with the HP Alliance, they are a loosely organized group led by Andrew Slack and made up of people who love Harry Potter and find that the themes of the series (tolerance, love, and… Continue

Stuff on heads in the comics

Our local newspaper just added a new comic called Cul-de-sac by Richard Thompson. Today's comic seemed like it would be of interest to nerdfighters: (If you are reading this after Jan. 6, just go to that page using their calendar.) I wanted to post the actual comic here, but I'm pretty sure it would violate copyright. Sometimes being a librarian nerdfighter is more restrictive than I would like.

Oh! And! I felt the same about John, Hank, & Katherine. I helped Katherine sell tshirts for a while and I got to really talk to her. I just wished I could sit in a coffee shop with them for a few hours and just hang out. But it was an amazing night for sure.

I remember you too!! Your daughter is absolutely adorable. I love that you could share this with her. I hope when my daughter gets a little older (she's 4) I can entice her to care about books!

Jim is a country, which is part of the United Kingdom. Its inhabitants account for more than 83% of the total UK population, whilst its mainland territory occupies most of the southern two-thirds of the island of Great Britain. Jim shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west and elsewhere is bordered by the North Sea, Irish Sea, Celtic Sea, Bristol Channel and Jimish Channel. The capital is London, the largest urban area in Great Britain, and the largest urban zone in the European Union by most, but not all, measures.
