What Kind of Nerdfighter Are You?
Writing/Literature/Musical Nerd.
About Me:
I'm a writer, I always have been. I'm majoring in creative writing here at WMU (which means someday I will probably be asking you for spare change, so when the time comes, please be kind). I was hoping to join the Peace Corps straight out of high school, but if you don't have a college degree they only accept you if you can milk a cow while speaking three languages. That may still be an option after graduation (joining the Peace Corps, not the cow business), we'll see.

I love theater, Kzoo has a pretty great theater community if you know where to look. If there is a play or a musical in this city chances are I'll be there. I love to go to fiction and poetry readings (this gets nerdier and nerdier as I go, but hey, I'm among friends), Western has given me the chance to see a lot of influential artists like Stu Dybeck, Li-Young Lee, Nancy Eimers, Bill Olsen, Bryan Charles, and Victor LaVelle and the experience has been mind blowing.

I'm an independent movie lover, IFC is the only channel I watch, although I do love The Simpsons, The Tick, Invader Zim, and Freaks and Geeks. I'm a Nintendo master, it took me months to find a Wii, but now that I have one we will never be apart again. Also, if you ever want to go Old School and play some Dr. Mario, I'll take you on any time, any place.

I think that I love Hank and John because they've managed to combine some of my favorite things, Tetris, books, Strawberry Hill, chin waxing, Rwanda, global awareness and hilarity into one delicious blenderized package.

"Ask yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness should be waiting for us in our graves...or whether it should be ours here and now on this earth."- Ayn Rand

"You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake"- Maye West

"I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center." - Kurt Vonnegut

"What about little microphones? What if everyone swallowed them, and they played the sounds of our hearts through little speakers, which could be in the pouches of our overalls? When you skateboarded down the street at night you could hear everyone's heartbeat, and they could hear yours, sort of like sonar. One weird thing is, I wonder if everyone's hearts would start to beat at the same time, like how women who live together have their menstrual periods at the same time, which I know about, but don't really want to know about. That would be so weird, except that the place in the hospital where babies are born would sound like a crystal chandelier in a houseboat, because the babies wouldn't have had time to match up their heartbeats yet. And at the finish line at the end of the New York City Marathon it would sound like war."- Jonathon Safran Foer

This reply is ridiculously late, but I would love to read some of your work if you're still up for sharing it!!! I don't know how much use I'd be in the criticism department though, you're the one majoring in creative writing :-)
I'm going to be away for a week and possibly interwebless, so if I don't reply for a bit, that's why!

Hi, I love the idea you have for your novel! It sounds very intense though, have you started writing it yet? I imagine doing it could be quite a rough ride... let me know how you get on with submitting your work to magazines!

I know what you mean about wanting to study everything... but the nice news is, you can! I didn't want my college days to be over, but when they were I found out there is one massive benefit: time that is really your own. Of course I have to do overtime sometimes, but usually when I get home from the office my time is my own in a way that it never was before. There isn't that paper due by friday or that exam next week nagging at my conscience - so I can study whatever the hell I like! You can get university textbooks really cheap at second hand bookshops, especially when the university has started using a newer edition for the course. And umm... writing this I realize that you will actually not have the same experience, because as a writer there will always be the small matter of that book that needs to be written nagging at your conscience. On the bright side though, a big part of writing is research, so make sure you write about things you want to learn more about :-)

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

The End of 2008

In survey form. I stole this from UnityofEffect. I figured if Hank Green does it, so should I (that is my usual motto anyhow).

1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?

Ate sushi.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I don't make resolutions.I just try to be a good person, and I don't always make it.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

No, but I did go to a wedding at which six people… Continue
