Quincy replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"Yes, because I define 'sound' as 'a disturbance or disruption in the environment that would create auditory sensation if in any auditory perceiver if any were in range.'"

Sabrina Houara replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"I believe that sound is something we perceive, so no it would not make a sound. As many have pointed out, it would still make a vibration, but if there is no living thing around to HEAR it, a sound is not made. Sound is perceived, just as beauty is…"

Nea Ruth replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"Interesting post! Really thought provoking.However..!Let us assume that the word "sound" means the actual vibrations in air which is not dependent of the process of hearing. Even if all human beings were wiped of the earth, the fact…"

Joseph Walley replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"The only reason we don't know when a star burns out is because of light and has nothing to do with sound."

Joseph Walley replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"No is my answer it doesn't make a sound as it's the thing in the ear (I don't know the scientific name don't blame me I'm 12) that turns the vibrations know as sound into a sound there for if there is nothing to turn the…"

Kat replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"Yes. Because, you know, science. Although it keeps the philosophers nice and quiet. It's actually quite a presumptuous question, suggesting a person has to witness something for it to be classed as actually having happened."

Matthew replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"I think this question is actually really deep because its asking if the universe is dependant on consciouness or if it is independant. It's asking the question of whether the world is the figment of our imagination (us as in any conscious…"

Herman Dhillon replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"I would say yes because of the fact that the definition of sound is the vibrations that travel through the air/other medium that (keyword) "CAN" be heard when they reach a person or animal's ear. You can't disregard…"

Harry Barker replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"The only debate here is what defines sound, if you think its when its to be received or when its entered the air. "

Harry Barker replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"When things happen they sometimes emit a vibrations to the air and that is sound. Just because no one is around to hear it doesn't mean it didn't happen. This not happen would ask all sorts of questions for scientists. One example of how I…"

Meg Goeke replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"For sound to exist, it requires three things: a source of sound (the tree), and medium through which to travel (the air), and a receiver of some kind (the ears of whoever hears it). Therefore, if NOBODY is around to hear the sound, then there is no…"

Mia Stripling replied to Parker Brown's discussion If a tree falls in the middle of the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it still make a sound?
"I would say yes, because when matter hits matter, it will vibrate, producing noise. Even if no one were around to hear it, the tree would still make a sound."
