Trevelyan replied to Vertigo_One [Ops Mod]'s discussion POTUS Birth requirements
"It seems quite strange to me too - our current Prime Minister and Opposition Leader were both born overseas. They're both fairly terrible, but that's not the result of where they were born."

Trevelyan replied to Carly Ogletree's discussion Is it rude to conduct social experiments?
"Generally with social experiments, the subjects should know they're taking part in an experiment (and preferably sign a waiver to that effect, if you're planning on using the results). They don't have to know what exactly is being…"

Trevelyan replied to jeancrowley's discussion Do you think that the acquisition of language is genetics?
"No, absolutely not. Child language acquisition is a really complex, interesting process, but race has little or nothing to do with it."

Trevelyan replied to Homer Ruglia Beoulve's discussion Being a "nerd" now is a social trend?
"Isn't there kind of a hypocrisy in resenting people for mocking you because you fit into their stereotype of a 'nerd', and then turning around and heaping scorn on other people because they don't fit your stereotype of a…"

Trevelyan replied to Juliet's discussion Marking in your books
"I doubt the authors would care. Anyone who has to read the book after you might, though. If it's your book, do what you like, but if not it's pretty inconsiderate to mark it up."

Trevelyan replied to Ben Attwood's discussion Which is our best alternative to fossil fuels
"One really cool idea is photosynthetic paint. Of course no one's saying it's possible any time in the near future, and there are decades of research to be done, but still, very cool."

Trevelyan replied to Paddy's discussion What do you imagine being dead would feel like?
"There are a lot of awesome ways for characters to 'experience' death in fiction - but in reality, I don't think it will feel like anything, because I'll have nothing left to feel with and there will be nothing left of me to feel…"

Trevelyan replied to E_Lewis's discussion Is Being Gay a Choice?
"I don't believe that it's a choice. I didn't come out of the womb and tick a little box saying I was going to like men; my best friend didn't come out of the womb and tick the other box saying she was going to like women. But…"

Trevelyan replied to Hanine ϟ's discussion Book Recommendations for a Guy?
"No, 'Sandman' is a pretty common concept :)"

Trevelyan replied to John Eric Tiessen's discussion Men and Women: Who's serving who?
"You're still getting snubbed because women are not slot machines. You don't feed a certain number of chivalrous coins into them and have them fall at your feet. You don't earn points for treating girls as equals, because that should…"

Trevelyan replied to Hanine ϟ's discussion Book Recommendations for a Guy?
"Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim series. Totally hilarious. Harper Collins has a sample up here: http://www.harpercollins.com/browseinside/index.aspx?isbn13=9780061714313&WT.mc_id=biHTMLWidget93ba6271-6af1-4532-9dac-aa655400dfc4"

Trevelyan replied to Devon Stormagedon's discussion Film Adaptations and The Great Gatsby
"I will never, ever see The Seeker: The Dark is Rising. I loved those books as a child, and I was really excited when I heard they were being made into a movie. Then I learned that they had made the child protagonist into a teenager, given him a love…"

Trevelyan replied to CD's discussion Do organisations promote the opposite of what they actually do?
"No social scientists here, I'm afraid :)  Just a student with many interests.I really think there might be something in the idea of personalising the issue. Charities personalise causes by asking you to sponsor a specific child, and by…"

Trevelyan replied to CD's discussion Do organisations promote the opposite of what they actually do?
"I suspect it's related to the same sociopsychological impulses that cause the bystander effect - diffusion of responsibility, basically. In the same way that 38 people stood and watched Kitty Genovese be brutally murdered, and all assumed that…"

What Kind of Nerdfighter Are You?
An Excel Illiterate.
About Me:
As I write this, I'm simultaneously working on a forensic linguistic authorship identification of a series of letters. For this, I need Excel to DO STUFF with numbers. Unfortunately Excel is refusing to speak to me, and I need to learn how to sweet-talk it with better formulas. After that I'm going to go and write about how the Russian elections were a bit dodgy but not as dodgy as a lot of people think, and how Western media stretches the truth to sell newspapers. Please to end soon, semester.
Favorite Books, Movies, Music, and more
My favourite book is generally the last one I read. Right now I'm reading Kill the Dead by Richard Kadrey, and it is awesome. Before that I was reading No Present Like Time by Steph Swainston, and that was good too. Long-term loves include The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper (staple of my childhood. I still have the copy with the cover that was half-eaten by my rabbit. He liked to chew stuff), The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, anything by Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, R.L. Stevenson, Oscar Wilde, George RR Martin... but I'm pretty omnivorous, I like most books.
What's your favorite thing to put on your head?
Dye. This summer it was pink dye; two months ago it was purple dye. I'm slowly shading towards blue, I think. I also like hats.
If you could do your happy dance with anyone who would it be with?
Everyone, anyone.
When did you start watching the Vlogbrothers?
2012
