Ok, just had to share my "ahh" for today. Bugs the 3yr old magician held up a glass and said in a slow drawn out voice "do you see it?" "yes" She closes her eyes and says in the same voice "now you don't." It might have lost something in translat...

What Kind of Nerdfighter Are You?
Covered with a thin layer of awesome on the outside, but mostly regular stuff on the inside.
About Me:
Nerd-gardener. I am always interested in plants that no one grows anymore. For me, the best plant would be common in the 1500's, grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, Rare, and practically extinct. I just got a seed catalog that claims a seed of a particular plant was found in a pharoe's tomb. Pretty much going to grow that one!
Favorite Books
When I was 12, I read Martian Chronicles. Which showed me how much fun reading can be, and how it can show you different perspectives. When I was 16, a teacher pointed me towards Still Life with a Woodpecker. Which I enjoyed tremendously. Catch-22 is another influential book. For a while I was reading lots of Barbra Tuchman. She got me reading history after I didn't have to for class. I have enjoyed several Michael Pollan books recently. I especially recommend Botany of Desire. Mark Twain's "Roughing It" is great. The story of his travels out west. He took a stage-coach to Nevada, and tried to earn a living in many ways. So that's me, a smattering of fiction and non-fiction. I'll grab onto an author I like and read the heck out of them, and then shift to someone else. Terry Pratchett. Christopher Moore is nicely deranged. Have I mentioned Harry Potter? The Hobbit. I really like Tolkien. Just read Looking For Alaska.
What's your favorite thing to put on your head?
Glad to still have hair!
When did you start watching B20

Spring!

I am starting to see signs of spring. My first crocuses popped up a week ago. Seed racks are turning up at grocery and hardware stored. And today: bees! I know everyone doesn't seem the world like I do, but for me, these are encouraging signs of spring. What are your signs?

Obama's speech last night

My favorite part:

And that is why I have ordered the closing of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, and will seek swift and certain justice for captured terrorists. (Applause.) Because living our values doesn't make us weaker, it makes us safer and it makes us stronger. (Applause.) And that is why I can stand here tonight and say without exception or equivocation that the United States of America does not torture. We can make that commitment here tonight.

which isn't to say I didn't… Continue

VT100

In case anyone was wondering, a VT100 was an ancient computer terminal from back when I was a kid. They looked like this:

When I was in college, we had them all over campus. We used to construct primitive animation with them. Here is a really cool example I ran into recently… Continue

sludgecicle

Is there a word for the road-junk that gets stuck on your car behind the tires when the roads are snowy and icy? I propose "sludgecicle", if there isn't already a word. Sort of like icicle, but without the image of purity that ice suggests. maybe gunkcicle. I suppose "blob of frozen slush" could work, but it seems so clunky.

post traumatic election syndrome

Do you find yourself watching the news, reading the paper, and suddenly realizing that things are probably going to be OK? For years, as America has slid into a deep, dark hole, I watched with horror. Now, I watch, and think "At least now we have a president who is interested in solving the problem. Maybe I can just relax a bit". Which is great, but a little disorienting. The incompetence of our government was as steady as sunrise in the east. Now I think there is a chance that Obama will actual… Continue

At the behest of LAly, I'm here to let you know about the gathering tomorrow night at 9:00 pm CST. Same link as LAly posted below.

And as I came to bug you, I was reminded afresh that I have yet to "friend" you, which seems awfully silly...

It's where some of the Ningers play catchup. Maybe in a meebo sort of chatroom in a blog page. (not the main nerdfighter one) I've started a blog about it. We're sort of tossing around ideas. I'm asking for availability and all that in the link I left below.

DFTBA :)
