Just wanted to set the record straight.
DFTBA
To start, (obviously) a book needs to be chosen. Considering the median age of the Nerdfighters, we opted for a YA book. The Nerdfighter who started this project--Oh how lovely--asked for book suggestions from the community; eventually she listed the suggested books and had us vote. After the book was chosen (An Abundance of Katherines by John Green), Oh how lovely established a cut off date for sign ups, and told everyone who was interested that they should e-mail (or private message her) their address. After the cut off date passed, the group started discussing the nitty-gritty of the project. What rules are there? How long can one have the book? Hey, should we have a journal as well to write down our thoughts? How exactly is this book going to be passed along? What are we going to do with it when we're done?
We decided that a journal would be passed around with the book so people can write down their thoughts and feelings on the book (they are also alowed to write in the book, too). The organizer, or a willing volunteer, took the addresses and sent everyone an address of a person to whom they would be passing the book and journal along to. It is important to remind the participants that postage fare may get expensive the heavier the book and journal is and the further they have to send it. I was in charge of organizing the addresses and giving everyone an address to send to; I decided to randomly organize the addresses (however, I did organize the European countries because of time and money issues. . .it would also be good to look for volunteers to send the book and journal overseas to the overseas participants). You can choose to organize the addresses anyway you'd like (obviously. I mean, I'm not going to tell you what to do, that'd be rude. I'm just babbling now, I should stop. . .anyways).
We also decided on three rules: 1) While the book and journal are in your possession, you must do something to decrease World Suck; 2) you can only keep the book and journal for two weeks [your group may opt for more or less time]; 3) you must pass the book and journal along to the next participant
Right now, we are discussing, off and on, what we are going to do with the book and journal when we are done. Suggestions like giving the book and journal to John, or selling or raffeling them off and giving the money raised to charity, or giving the book and journal to a Nerdfighter who participated in the project, or scanning the journal onto a computer and uploading the pages to a website so people can see what the Nerdfighters wrote, or a combination of any of these. Other ideas have been mentioned, and I know many other great ideas will be thought up.
Because of the two week time limit, and because about 100 Nerdfighters signed up for this project, Oh how lovely split the group up into two groups--thus two books and two journals; this way, the project would be completed in two years instead of four years.
Because I have everyone's e-mail address, I send out monthly e-mails to everyone reminding them of the rules and that they should participate in the discussion thread and Ning group. I mostly do this to remind everyone, and myself, of the project; you know how crazy life can get, sometimes ya just forget things :D.
In short, this project is all about a large group of Nerdfighters participating in a fun project while looking to decrease World Suck in any way and in as many ways as possible.
If you need clarification or further explanation or have any more questions, feel free to post a message on the groups wall or post a message on my wall.
I hope this helps you out :)
DFTBA!
