What Kind of Nerdfighter Are You?
Habsburg Nerdfighter
About Me:
I graduated from college with a B.A. in German Studies (and a minor in music).

In September I'll be heading off to Vienna, Austria for my second year of being an English teaching assistant in two high schools. The schools themselves will be new to me, but I'm pretty pumped to get back to Austria. When I'm not there, I live in Minnesota.

A few things I like: cooking, grocery shopping, knitting, singing, reading, feminism, traveling, learning, and teaching
Favorite Books, Movies, Music, and more
YA fantasy, including but not limited to: Tamora Pierce (Tortall over Emelan, though), Harry Potter, Obernewtyn books by Isobelle Carmody, The Forgotten Beasts of Eld and Riddle-Master by Patricia McKillip, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials

Other books: Madeleine L'Engle (A Ring of Endless Light), Margaret Atwood (The Blind Assassin, Oryx and Crake, The Handmaid's Tale), William Goldman (The Princess Bride), Audrey Niffenegger (The Time Traveler's Wife), Elizabeth Kostova (The Historian), Anita Diamant (The Red Tent)

Books that I feel a little guilty about liking (aka Junk Reads): Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, Stephenie Meyer's Twilight books, Laurell K. Hamilton - both Anita and Merry, Dan Brown books, Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse novels
What's your favorite thing to put on your head?

Current Reads/Views

FINALLY updated August 2009:

I just read: The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev
I'm going through a bit of a Mount Everest binge at the moment. I read Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, an account of the May 10, 1996 disaster and wanted another perspective on it. This book (which John incidentally put in the TOSS pile today!), provided that. Combining the deadly conditions of Everest with some real-life heroism and a taste of life after the Soviet Union collapsed, it was a really enjoyable read.

I am currently reading: Stardust by Neil Gaiman.
I'd been wary of Gaiman after reading American Gods a few summers ago, which just totally didn't do it for me, but I read The Graveyard Book this summer and really, really liked it, so I thought I'd give Stardust a shot. I'm about halfway through, and so far I LOVE it. I saw the movie a year and a half ago and heard it described as The Princess Bride for a new generation, and I can totally see where that idea came from. Definitely a fun read.

Latest movies: The last one I saw in the theater was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which I thought was cinematically very impressive, if a bit different from the book.

Here's a link to my LibraryThing, in case anyone wants to take a gander:

Phloxyloxy's Blog

Second post! On books and movies.

First, movies, since there's really only one I want to discuss:

I saw Julie & Julia with my mom today. Yes, I'm 23 and still see movies with my mom. It's a side-effect of living at home while I'm back in the States for the summer. Anyway, I really enjoyed it, both for the cooking aspect (it spoke to the aspiring culinary goddess in me) but also for the way that they wove together the two story lines. Also, Meryl Streep as Julia Child = WIN! So hilarious, it was hard not to… Continue

First blog post!

So, I've decided to start a reading blog on here, as a place to write miniature reviews or reflections of the latest books I've read. Movies might also factor in, but I guess it will depend.

So, first off we have two very different books - Momo, the German-language young adult fantasy book by Michael Ende, and When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris, which just came out last month and is a collection of short stories for a more mature audience (but not… Continue
