I never liked Micheal Gambon much (he ruined most of GOF for me), but in HBP I feel like he redeemed himself. Although I will always prefer Richard Harris as Dumbledore, my dislike for Gambon has lessened considerably.
Richard Harris is a BAMF, I loved him like I love coconut cake. He was the epic embodiment of Dumbledore and that can never be replaced, but to his credit Gambon's choices to show the crazy in Dumbledore were admirable and true to character. Though…
Gambon hasn't read any of the books and he hasn't watched the first 2 HP movies either. GRRRRRRR I really really don't like him... Wish we could get a Resurrection Stone for Harris. He was absolutely perfect.
Gambon is a darn good actor, so i think that we should all do as you say and go see HBP with and open mind about him.
