We interrupt your regular programming for a special announcement.

This is major. This is the most important thing to ever happen to our vocal program in the history of its existence. We got the news from Mrs. Myers today. She said, in January of 2009, the Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors will travel to...

Part of the Pride-Chapter One.

Written as a present for my Band Buddy, here is chapter one of Part of the Pride, enjoy!

Part of the Pride

The chronicles of a freshman flute player in the Pride of Owasso High School Marching Band. Told totally unscripted and totally unedited, it is about all the joys, heartbreaks, and laughs shared when you become part of our family and embrace marching music in its purest form . Warning: we are not responsible if your Flute Section gets… Continue

Part of the Pride-Chapter Four

The meaning of "Doubler."

After one more time consuming rehearsal, we threw ourselves immediately into school and all the things in preparation. In honor of such things, we had the afternoon before the first day off. I remember attending the last day of freedom lunch with my mom in my marching shorts and a t-shirt. The next day, after some praise from Kristi and some of my new upperclassmen friends about finishing Comp. Band, I was ready for school. Or, at least I… Continue

Do you remember my list...

About six or seven months ago I posted a list of what I wanted to get done right before and during my Freshman year. Here is a copy of said list :

Band Camp - I really want to make first band again.

Comp. Band - I'm ready to be an official marching band student. I can take the workload.

All-District - My understanding of choral music has expanded greatly under Mrs. Barker's teaching. I hope to make it again this year.

All Region - I refuse to be left out again. This…

Part of the Pride-Chapter three

Comp. Band draws nearer…

After our, ahem, mishap, with the drill, we did get better. We practiced it nonstop and everyone began to get anxious for two big things: the annual "end of Pre band" band party and Comp. Band. Now, making Comp band your Freshman year, that was what kept us awake at night. I remember many a sleepless night thinking "Oh god! What am I gonna do if I don't make it! Surely death is worse than this!" In a sense, it would prove to be for the… Continue

Congratulations, L.D. Bell, our 2007 Grand National Champions!

Yay! Go L.D Bell. Great job guys, we knew you could do it. You want to know how I heard the news? Traveling back on a bus from Mid-West City, at 11:47 PM, Cameron texted his entire section the news. L.D. Bell got First. Carmel got Third. B.A. got Sixth. Or course, they are going to be P.O.ed in the worst way when they come back. They have to take down their Grand Nats. sign in front of their town and all those kids paid 14,000 to fly to Indy! That has to suck. I'm excited for next year even… Continue

Band is affecting my life in peculiar ways these days.

In band today, Mr. O'Kelly asked Kevin, Metzger and I to stand up. We warily stood, waiting for what we knew was coming. He announced we were All-State vocalists. I was so proud to stand amidst my peers and have them show a round of applause for our choir. We thanked him after class, and I couldn't help but ponder and remark he made after singing a warm-up pitch. "I bet they could do it better." He said referring to us. I could hear Kevin's high pitched laugh from the back of the band. I have a… Continue

Without giving too much away...I MADE ALL-STATE!!!

Yes, that's right. Eight in all out of the ten in the Freshman class that tried out. That...is astonishing. Oh my gosh. Mrs. Barker was so happy with us. We also had five eighth graders, including my buddies Victoria and Damian as well as fellow hybrid, Victoria. One seventh grade boy made it. And out of the high school a lot of Sopranos made Jazz and Cheyenne and Grant made alternate. But, there are only 6 spots per part in Jazz, so that's really good. Bet you there will be you know what to… Continue

Thanks, Brothers Green (Heroes, Seventh Son, and Nerdfighters)

I posted this in my pants, but it should be here:

_____

In season one of Heroes, we have an unpopular cheerleader (yeah, i know, oxymoron) Claire, and she is nominatdd for homecoming queen (before she decided she was a freak and had to hide who and what she was).

She has a nerd friend, who tells her that trying to be queen is beneath her.

She wins the vote for homecoming queen, and when she does, all the nerds on the bleachers cheer her. She is…

Empandas, Chicken Hats and Cross dressers= All-State Auditions!

Today, we loaded up all the choir kids on two charter buses and went to audition for All-State Honor Choir. Now, unlike Band, All-State Jr. High has a two step audition process for the girls ONLY. (because boys are so few they basically just through most of in for kicks.) You go to the prelim room for your first audition and tryout with aread card. If you do well, you get a green card and go straight to the finals. If you don't, you've just been "Idoled'; You're done, you don't have a… Continue

We step, or did, as one, in that Dome.

So, by now you've heard from every other band kid but your own the big news of the Pride. We went to Atlanta, and we got sixth place out of...43...I think...but that's not the point.

"With a score...of Eighty Five point FIVE FIVE. EIGHTY FIVE POINT FIVE FIVE.....THE PRIDE OF OWASSO MARCHING BAND!!!!!!"

The Crowd goes absolutely berserk, while we stand at attention, enjoying our moment.

Yay for us!!! But, sadly, Marching band is over...and that kind of sucks. But… Continue

Part of the Pride-Chapter Two.

Getting to know them.

It's hard to believe it, but we managed to get through that first week without anything bad happening! Well…except Mr. Taylor. Mr. Taylor is about the coolest old dude on the planet. He's incredibly fit because he is always running everywhere and he is super-smart when it comes to Marching Band. And he really does love the band. Maybe that was why he couldn't keep his secret from us. One day, we were cut short from our marching exercises and Mr.… Continue

Drum Break: B.A. @ B.A.!

Let's take a sit before we jump into the story of All District Day two. Why not talk about the game last night? Yay, football! Last night it was the Rams Vs. the Tigers, and our old buddies The Pride of B.A. were there. No worries, no one got flipped off this time. on the contrary, their very nice Drum Majors brought over popcorn and water for us in the forth quarter. And we took the Flute Senior pic. I swear, we have to put a rush on our section picture so I can get my Atlanta pics! Yes!… Continue

All-District, day one.

Today, was the first day of NCDA All-District Honor Choir 2007. Yay! With a name like...that, it has to be good. We got out miss school, and hang out in the PAC lobby, take pictures for the paper, then head over to a church in town for practice.

We split into Jr. high and Sr. High and went over parts. Which, admittedly was fun, seeing as I had a shy little Seventh grader as the only other person on the part. Mrs. Barker kept saying, softer guys, sing softer, but we didn't really see… Continue
