"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth."-Oscar Wild

"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth."-Oscar Wild

The fact that this quotes rings so true, amazes me because it is true isn't it? When you hand someone a mask they will speak without restraint, disclosing the most intimate details of their lives. They will throw themselves out there without fear of being judged and intern be reeled in with a group of new found friends to which they can relate, and…

The Great Gatsby: Living the Dream in the Valley of Ashes

In which John discusses critical readings of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, including metaphors and symbols like the color yellow, the green light at the end of the dock, the eyes of Doctor TJ Eckleburg, the valley of ashes, and the American dream.

I also write books. They are not as good as The Great Gatsby. My new one, The Fault in Our Stars, is… Continue

Gatsby's American Dream: Reading The Great Gatsby Critically, Chapter 1

In which John Green discusses the first chapter of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, including thoughts on the role that the ideas of the self-made man and the American dream fuel the beginning of the novel. Themes, metaphors, and symbols are all discussed--although hopefully not in that boring and unlikable way you all find so reprehensible.

Discuss the book!… Continue

Sometimes the Hype is Right

I never got into comic books. I don't even remember to read Dilbert on a regular basis but being a gaming nerd I was told I needed to see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. I sloughed it off as being a "psh whatever" Well I had a free Sunday for a change and wanted to see a movie and decided to give it a shot. There are a lot of movies I regret not seeing in theater and I am thankful that I went to the theater for this.
Just because it was me and I was in my own world, I was late to the movie…

Margo Roth Spiegelman

So, I've just started re-reading Paper Towns and I'm up to the bit where Margo and Q are in the SunTrust building. Anyway a Scott Pilgrim trailer comes on (btw looks awesome, Ramona is my wallpaper) and I look at the girl that's playing Ramona and think, that's almost exactly how I picture Margo. So, I'm thinking she should play Margo in the film. I also decided to do a quick edit and would like to see what other people think of her as Margo. ^^…

Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art

by Scott McCloud

Scott McCloud delivers a friendly, developed answer to the question, "What IS comics?" Beginning with the definition of comics as, "Juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence," McCloud takes the reader through what he calls the vocabulary of comics, the closure of transactions, timing, what happens between frames, how words and pictures can work together, the making process, color in comics, before drawing the conclusion that comics are an ever… Continue

Jimmy Carter Work Project Day 1

Today was day 1 of building here on the gulf. The opening ceremony was fantastic yesterday. I saw Jimmy Carter and wife Rosalynn speak and they were both great. The former president got choked up as he recounted a story from his habitat experience. How many speeches has this man given in his life time? And he can still get choked up? Wow. Either he is a bad public speaker or the impact of habitat on his life is really great. He hit on the point of how there is no us and them, only an us. We… Continue

Columnists - Scott Feschuk

What's eating you, Mother Nature? Is it us?

I always pictured you as a nice lady, but after this much snow you're one mean slut

An Open Letter to Mother Nature

Dear Bitch,

Are you for real?

We know it was wrong of us to stand idly by and let Al Gore show all those explicit photographs of what you're going to look like 30 years from now. But seriously — ease off. Enough with the… Continue

This one is for Roger

The youtube community morns the loss of Roger AKA TheBorningDispatcher. Roger, an actual trucking company dispatcher was a vlogger who often smoked, was vulgar, and rough around the edges. I’m not a fan of his work but many people were and many people have been flooding youtube with tribute videos. So this blog entry is for Roger. What I know of him was that he worked hard to provide a good life for his son. He loved the internet and the way it brought people together. He took something boring,… Continue
