the education system & its beneficiaries?

Hi,

So I was in somewhat of a brooding mood today.

Subject? The North American high school education system...or Canada's HS education system...or even just my own district's education system. and itsbeneficiaries.

The students.

See, the thing is, I always hear a lot of complaining about boring curriculum, crappy facilities, teaching, etc. from kids in multiple of my classes. In the news,…

Final Day of Tutoring

This semester I have been tutoring students every Thursday at Isaac Bear Early College.

When I first started, I was very nervous. I thought I would end up with students who did not want to be there and would, as such, not try to learn anything. They would be unwilling to listen to anything I said. Fortunately, minus one or two exceptions, that was far from the case.

Most of the students I tutored seemed very keen to learn and to figure out how to improve their writing. I… Continue

Ranting- Ignore, I just needed to get it off of my chest somehow...

I live with a friend that graduated with me from Whitman, along with a couple that graduated in 2003 and their daughter. This friend goes by the nickname of “Fluffy,” and I guess I’ll refer to him as that for the duration of this rant. Anyhoo, on Sunday evenings, our household hosts “TV night,” wherein everyone that wants to partake that we’re friends with can get together at our house and watch the next couple episodes in whatever series we’re on at the time. Last year, my senior year, the two… Continue

And he claims the economy has *improved* since Bush took office...?

Last week, when Lora was still here, there was a party for Jesus's 21st at which a Republican friend of mine was present. At some point, he said that the economy "has been getting better and better" since W. took office. I was practically speechless- how could anyone even remotely think that? I did my best not to blow up at him for such an arrogant statement, but I couldn't help but point out that my parents declaired bankruptcy under his watch, even though my dad had a steady job; and that he… Continue

Roommates of a Non-Tradtional Sense

My freshmen and sophomore years in college, I had kind of the traditional female roommate, the All-American-Girl. Had a boyfriend/fiancee or they were looking for love and they had the normal life. This year for me has been way different. I have a roommate confined to a wheelchair and the other two are from a different country (One from Indonesia and the other from Ghana). My Ghana roommate is loud and can get very mean sounding on the phone, but around the rest of us, she is sweet and always… Continue
