Worst Movie Flops Ever!!!

With over 4,000 screenings at over 3,000 locations, Mars Needs Moms may go down as one of the biggest flops in mainstream movie history. I’m sure films like Gigli are breathing a long sigh of relief, but this does little to make us forget about the epic failures on the big screen in years past. As a matter of fact, lets take a look at some of the more momentous flops in cinematic history:…

Shooting Live: April's End at Gramercy Theater

Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to shoot the band April’s End at Gramercy Theater in New York. If you’re a photographer in New York City, you know the problems that come with shooting musicians at poorly lit venues. Luckily, Gramercy Theater is better than the average club. The lighting is usually very consistent and allows for some great opportunities. This time around the lighting was challenging but not for the usual reasons. The band was not evenly lit but it…

Movie Review: Metropolis Restored (1927)

On January 10, 1927, a 153 minute version of Fritz Lang’s epic film Metropolis screened in Berlin, Germany to a less than enthusiastic reception. What followed was a series of re-cuts and rearrangements for each market

that the film was to be released. In the United States, theater managers

saw a film more than 90 minutes in length to be a crowd killer. The

1920’s had seen record highs in attendance with an average movie length

that has persisted into…

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1

I will be the first to admit that I was not taken by the Harry Potter craze when most were swept off of their feet. Maybe it had to do with my

undying love for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy or the yet incomplete

Star Wars Trilogy. Whatever the reason was, I never saw a Harry Potter

film or read a Harry Potter book until the beginning of this October. I

know that this will seem…

The Modern Zombie: Out of Touch

The popularity of the “zombie” is something that has reached new levels over the last ten years. The success of publications like Zombie Survival Guide, Pride, Prejudice and Zombies, The Walking Dead and Marvel Zombies are just a few examples of the new wave of undead madness. With the premiere of The Walking Dead television show on AMC and the release of Dead Rising 2 for the XBox 360, it’s hard to argue that…

Movie Review: Jackass 3D

3D cinema has evolved from cheap trickery to lure teenagers into

1950’s horror films to a viable form of artistic expression. While it’s

evolution is slow and still hasn’t found a home in every genre, it’s

hard to deny that we are seeing a drastic leap forward in the way we

experience theater. On Monday night (10/11) I traveled to MOMA for an

exclusive screening of the latest installment in stupidity, Jackass 3D.

Needless to say I didn’t walk into this… Continue

Video Games as Art

Art is a very subjective term, especially when talking about visual

imagery such as cinema or photography. People tend to lean on arbitrary

qualifications of what makes something art and what doesn’t. This

argument is raised on a week to week basis in the film community. Every

time a film is released the first thing we hear, aside from hearing

about the entertainment factor, is whether or not the film has

significant artistic value. Now, what exactly does that… Continue

R.I.P. George Steinbrenner (1930 - 2010)

Considering the poor health of George Steinbrenner, owner of the New

York Yankees, it comes as no shock that he died of a heart attack

earlier this morning. Mr. Steinbrenner will be remembered as one of the

most controversial and passionate owners in the history of sports. He

took a crumbling empire that CBS cared little about and restored it to

prominence. All of this is easy to learn about simply by looking up any

biography. What is harder to find is the personal… Continue

Watch Out Pixar! Here Comes The Bad Guy!

According to boxofficemojo.com Despicable Me rules the movie mountain after its 60.1 million dollar opening weekend. This number is impressive considering the hype behind The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has yet to die down. Also this is the second highest grossing non Pixar original animated film (The first being Kung Fu Panda). This may not seem impressive considering the huge opening numbers that Toy Story 3

put up but it…

Controversy and the Controversial Actor

With the popularity of TMZ, ET, and various other news or tabloid outlets, audiences spend more time talking about the controversial actor rather than talking about the controversial actor’s body of work.

Information is at our finger tips each time we wish to hear about the

latest rehab stint or run in with the law of our favorite celebrities.

Sometimes we cheer them on during their long road to recover. Other

times we vilify them and point to what could have been. Our…

The Lost Art of Movie Posters

here is an old saying: “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

Unfortunately the same saying does not apply to movies. Audiences can

be drawn or diverted by the artwork splashed over a 27×41 inch canvas.

Bright colors, sexy people, and exotic places have all been used to

entice viewers into theater seats since the inception of Hollywood.

While these items seem essential to selling a movie, they’ve lacked the

bang that once helped to create the buzz in movie… Continue

"Small Jobs" Begins Shooting and I Get to Finally See A Yankees Game!!!

Let me begin this blog by speaking about why I’m excited about being able to see a Yankees game. I work in theater, not the movie theater, live Broadway theater. Therefore, my hours of operation differ greatly

from that of your typical weekday warrior. It’s not easy. Most days it’s

downright annoying. I’ve missed out on tons of social opportunities,

music performances, birthdays, and yes… baseball games. Your average

baseball game starts at either 7pm or 8pm.…

What Killed "The Horror at Piney Point?"

Every time a movie dies, a devil gets its wings. If that’s true then there are a lot of flying devils circling the southern half of California. A comparable amount also circle the

island of Manhattan. Unfortunately for yours truly, there is one

circling his small uptown apartment. That devil managed to take flight

thanks to the death of my horror film The Horror At Piney Point.

It breathed its last breath in late April when…

Movie Review: Away We Go (2009)

Sam Mendes seems to have a love/hate relationship with the suburbs. Often times he’ll bury the complacent, shut in, mentality of the people living there and expose the somewhat disturbing lives hiding behind their cookie cutter walls. His latest film, Away We Go, does a complete 180 degree turn from what the director has pushed on us through several films. Written by author and editor Dave Eggers, Away We Go is less about the giant rat trap that is the American Dream and…

Movie Review: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)

Terry Gilliam has seemingly led two lives. His first as part of the legendary comedy troupe Monty Python and his second as the imaginative but sometimes dark film director. The Imaginarium of Doctor

Parnassus
is yet another mind bending experience from the same man

that brought us Brazil and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

With that in mind, we should be well aware of the lengths Mr. Gilliam

will go to mystify an audience.

Imaginarium…

2010 and beyond

Blogging has never been my strong point. I'm hoping to do it more now that my new website is being finish (thanks Jen). I normally don't know what to talk about unless I've been impassioned to rant about a philosophical cinematic dilemma. So this is something very new to me. I'm sure the early entries will appear rather stiff like the top button of a collared shirt that is two sizes too small. Perhaps it'll come naturally after the first few attempts. Writing is like exercising your brain. At… Continue

An Economic Observation on the Current State of Modern Cinema

Ever since Leland Stanford asked Eadweard Muybridge to capture his horse Sallie Gardner's motions with 24 separate cameras in one of the earliest experiments in moving pictures, the world has been fascinated by the flickering box. Less than a hundred years later, motion pictures have become arguably the most popular form of art and entertainment on the planet. It seemed as if we'd reached the end of infancy when artists such as Stephen Speilberg, George Lucas, Frances Coppola, and Stanley… Continue
