starred review: Paper Towns

from Booklist, June 1-15, 2008: In a review of Paper Towns, John Green is noted: "That he brings it off is testimony to the fact that he is not only clever and wonderfully witty but also deeply thoughtful and insightful. In addition, he's a superb stylist, with a voice perfectly matched to his amusing, illuminating material." (Michael Cart, reviewer). Starred review for Suite Scarlett on same page! Nerdfightin' on PMOG

I just created a Nerdfighters mission on PMOG. If you are already playing, please take my mission, and become my ally! I am superl on PMOG. If you have not joined the PMOG mania, I urge you to at least check it out! Take the tour! It is quite fun. And if lots of Nerdfighters join, we can ally together and create great missions. I don't know how it works, but we might be able to even create a Nerdfighter badge. So-- what is PMOG????? It is the Passively Multiplayer… Continue

economic stimulus challenge

so... i live in canada, but i am a US citizen (i still have to file a tax return). yesterday i got a letter from the IRS telling me that i am going to receive a check for $600 because of the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008. and in the words of the letter, I don't have to do anything. really!! Basically, GWB is giving me a bribe. for what, i've not yet figured out. My challenge to Gnerdfighters who get this "gift" from the IRS... spend at least $50 of it on your favourite charity. If you made a vi… Continue

Nerd up! Challenge

Saw the Nerd Up! blog post, with John's list of the 5 nerdiest things to do in Indianapolis. Here's my challenge to friends (suggested in one of the comments)--what are the 5 nerdiest things to do in your town? Or, in the case of rural folk, in your AREA.. here's mine (i gotta think hard for these!) 1) Go to the library and play DDR or Guitar Hero. 2) Release lots of books on Book Crossing. Chastise your friends who are reading the books and have not made notes on said books being caught. 3) W… Continue

kids singing

ok, so kids are pretty cute, right? but i've always detested those "kids" albums with kids singing. kids singing is really not cute. today my husband went and recorded a group of 4 & 5 year olds singing "o canada". this proves that kids singing is not cute -- but it sure as heck is funny. if you want to hear, go to the playlist here on my page and click on the song. but let me warn you-- if you have perfect pitch, you should NOT listen to this. if you like cats screeching or fingernails on a… Continue

lunar eclipse

the moon was so lovely last night! went out around 10:15 (atlantic time) and it had started. by 11 PM it was nearly fully eclipsed. we went out around 10:45 for a walk, but it was so cold and the wind was biting into us, so we mostly stood in the darkest part of our yard and gazed up to the heavens and watched the earth's shadow engulf Lady Luna. Tried to take some pictures, but a tripod is needed in that low light. at least we had clear skies to see the event! i even saw two shooting stars as w… Continue

sleeping in the library, or, bringing up nerdfighters

last friday night i got to sleep in the library. while to some, this may sound like a prison sentence (I was one of those till very recently), it was actually fun. here's why it was fun: the kids! kids ages 5-11 were allowed to bring their sleeping bags, camping gear, and a parent, and sleep in the library, and they loved it. they were soooo excited! and they didn't even know yet about the special guest we had lined up (Robert Munsch!). They came in, clutching their flowered
or super-heroed… Continue

five things tag

ok, five things about me... i'll make it quick, cuz i have to go get ready for the library sleepover...

1) I used to live in a school bus
2) I have 3 tattoos and they are not tiny little butterflies
3) I make my own beer, though my last batch really sucked
4) I LIKE Yoko Ono's music and once got to see her play in Central Park and do NOT think she is eligible for the Evil Baby Orphanage
5) I am ashamed of this one: I have not yet read An Abundance of Katherines. (But I… Continue

Librarian conference with NerdFighters

I just returned from the ALA (American Library Association) conference.. a few NF spottings and fun things to report. First, my friend Kirsten made me a NerdFighters bracelet. Picture in my photos! I had my "NerdFighters Made of Awesome" tag that I printed out stuck on my badge, and gave a few out as well, so had several conversations as a result. Even did a pretty terrible version of Accio Deathly Hallows with a fellow NF librarian at a fancy-schmancy reception (others at our table were a bit u… Continue
