I got interesting in silk-screening, and decided to give it a try. My family was watching episodes of Eureka, where people often visit a coffee shop called Cafe Diem, and I decided to combine these two ideas and make t-shirts for the family with a Cafe Diem logo. This is my first attempt:

I am starting to see signs of spring. My first crocuses popped up a week ago. Seed racks are turning up at grocery and hardware stored. And today: bees! I know everyone doesn't seem the world like I do, but for me, these are encouraging signs of spring. What are your signs?

My favorite part:
And that is why I have ordered the closing of the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, and will seek swift and certain justice for captured terrorists. (Applause.) Because living our values doesn't make us weaker, it makes us safer and it makes us stronger. (Applause.) And that is why I can stand here tonight and say without exception or equivocation that the United States of America does not torture. We can make that commitment here tonight.
which isn't to say I didn't…

In case anyone was wondering, a VT100 was an ancient computer terminal from back when I was a kid. They looked like this:

When I was in college, we had them all over campus. We used to construct primitive animation with them. Here is a really cool example I ran into recently…

Is there a word for the road-junk that gets stuck on your car behind the tires when the roads are snowy and icy? I propose "sludgecicle", if there isn't already a word. Sort of like icicle, but without the image of purity that ice suggests. maybe gunkcicle. I suppose "blob of frozen slush" could work, but it seems so clunky.

Do you find yourself watching the news, reading the paper, and suddenly realizing that things are probably going to be OK? For years, as America has slid into a deep, dark hole, I watched with horror. Now, I watch, and think "At least now we have a president who is interested in solving the problem. Maybe I can just relax a bit". Which is great, but a little disorienting. The incompetence of our government was as steady as sunrise in the east. Now I think there is a chance that Obama will actual…

I am reading P & P. Definitely different. Most of the "action" in this book seems to be in the form of conversation. The fun part is the language. A little old fashioned, which should be no surprise since the book is almost 200 years old. I don't really speak that version of English like a native, but I can usually translate into something I am more confortable with. Lately, I have been translating into different versions of English, just for fun. Here is a sample paragraph, and some transla…

I hear people say "it's 5:00 somewhere" all the time. I got curious about where exactly it is 5:00. So I built a website that will tell you. Right now, it just lists the name of a city in the timezone that most recently turned 5:00. Over time, I hope to come up with pictures from those locations, and list more than one city. Maybe the maps of the timezones. That sort of thing. But for now, it just names a city. The link is:

I think it is slightly magical when a tiny seed grows into a plant. Maybe I'm just jealous that men can't give birth. (OK, not the actual birth part, but the rest seems pretty cool). Anyway, in additiona to buying seeds, I have taken to using seeds from plants I see while out on a walk. Sort of "finding" seeds. Well, "finding" them in someone elses landscaping. Some of the perenials take years to grow enough to flower on their own, but that's OK too. Normal people just buy the plants at a nursur…

My name is VT100, and I have a reading problem. For a while, I coped by donating all my used books to the library. Just so they didn't clutter up the house. Then for father's day, I was given a Sony e-book reader. Basically a high-contrast, high-res B&W screen with the capacity to hold about 150 books, and just enough buttons to let you pick a book, turn the page, and change the font size. It came with 1 free new book download, plus 100 free downloads from their "classics" library: A set of…

This is an attempt to steer the advertising selection program. I figure if I say Bicycle enough times, it will start advertising for bicycles on this page.

I was in my neighborhood the other day, and I saw a sign stapled on a telephone pole that said "Kidnapped!" on the top. So I took a closer look. It had a picture, but the rain had blurred it into a blob of color. The text went on to say that Happy the gnome has been kidnapped. The kidnappers were identified as the Garden Gnome Liberation Front, and it included a phone number to call for more information. So all was well, no actual kidnappings, and I went on about my business. It was kind of funn…

My neighbor has a new puppy. His name is Messier. I thought he must have been named after the famouse 18th century astronomer. I figured that my neighbor must be more of a nerd than I thought. Apparently the puppy was named after a hockey player. Goggle tells me a good one. So 1) I am clueless about sports, and 2) I am a nerd. As if there was any doubt.

Carlos Williams wrote a poem "This is just to say". It goes like this:
I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
A wonderfully short non-apology, which people have been writing spoofs of for years. This American life featured this idea on a recent episode. Some examples:
I have pulled the
Pin from that grenade
On the desk.
Forgive me.
I thought it was
My keyring,
And--…

with a nerd-mower, of course! Here is a picture of mine

I know it looks like some old fashioned piece of junk, but stay with me a minute. It is practically silent, so I can easily listen to my mp3 player, say Hi to people walking down the sidewalk, or just hear myself think. It uses…

This is a cool website.

You enter the name of an author you like, and it shows you a graph of authors who are similar. Or at least are liked by people who like the author who's name you entered. Does that make sense? give it a try!
Best Wishes!

To review: when I was born, a hard-drive contained about 1 Meg of storage, and cost more than you can imagine. Which meant that things like the ning would be way too expensive, and no one had a computer to log into it with anyway. The Grinch who Stole Christmas had not been seen on TV yet. Neil Armstrong had not landed anywhere. A black man or a woman would not be taken seriously as candidates for President of America. There are some bumps on the road ,but good things are happening all the time!
