Look folks, I know you are super extremely excited about BANG but it was never my intention to have people coming from states away. Hell, it was never my intention to have people coming from western mass!
Boston's a weird little town with a lot of nerds and I thought we might have ten or fifteen or so folks show up who are all locals. The thing would only be for the afternoon to evening on one day, and that's really not worth the time and money investment of planes and buses and road trips that I keep reading about in these comments. The end goal, for me, would be to make some friends nearby. So if you're planning ridiculous things like coming from Virginia or somesuch, or arranging your college interviews to coincide, maybe you shouldn't, and instead should try to arrange your OWN Nerdfighter Gathering for your own city or state. America is a huge country!
I feel very strange about this. I'm an executive for Anime Boston, which is the week before (on Easter this year) and I was there when the first convention got completely overwhelmed with people. I really don't want to be responsible for the wellbeing and fun times of SO MANY people, not to mention arranging crap like carpools when there's no parking to be found in the city and everyone should just be taking the T instead. This is really not what I intended at all and I'll be exhausted from the weekend before. I won't be capable of handling so many people or setting up events and challenges and working with store owners and restaurant people to OK a huge group of rabid nerds showing up at their doorstep.
What I don't want to do is call the thing off. What I'd like to do is say, if you're traveling more than two hours, don't! I'm absolutely certain that there are enough NF spread out over the country that there can be small and thus more intimate and better gatherings all within fairly close distances to your respective homes. Heck, BANG is so far off you can probably have your own before it happens!
In other news, Ning is not really set up for this kind of coordination as far as I can see. So everyone who is LOCAL and wants to help me out, please send me an email and I'll get a list type thing going. I'm mizufae at gmail and I'll try to set up a nice little google list thingy.
Sorry to be kind of bitchy, but I've been in these kinds of situations before and they never happen the way you want them to.
