Frequently Asked Questions at the Meebo thing

So I’m writing this because it has happened a couple of times that people wander into the meebo chat and have no idea who we are, and once they do ask a couple of questions, they sometimes get answers without the background information. So I hope this provides a little clarity to the new people, and the veterans can add whatever information they see necessary.
The most popular question: What is a Nerdfighter?

A Nerdfighter is a person that instead of being made up of organs and stuff, is actually made up of awesome and fights incessantly to decrease WorldSuck.

Allow me to explain:

Awesome is now a noun.

It all started in Jan. 01, 2007 in YouTube with Hank and John Green’s almost daily video blogs (vlogbrothers.) Their project consisted of vlogging back and forth for an entire year with the strict prohibition of textual communication. If any of them missed uploading a video or textually communicated, a punishment ensued. (Yes, those vids are fun to watch. Playlist.)

The YouTube viewer community grew and expanded to take over where the videos were posted in their blog. (That is the place to go if you want to catch up on the videos.) Eventually a forum was created called My Pants, where the community was allowed more interaction and general fun. Next came the Ning (explained below.)

… NerdFighter?

Yes, the name Nerdfighter was inspired by a video game. It stuck.

What do Nerdfighters do?

The Nerdfighter’s task is to fight WorldSuck, that is anything that makes the world suck… as the name implies. This can be done in any way you see fit that is beneficial to the community, the planet, the environment, etc.

How do I become a Nerdfighter?

Embrace your inner nerd, exploit your nerdfighting abilities, decide to be thoughtful rather than vapid… Ok, this question needs further answering. I just identified with the idea after watching the vlog.

Nerdfighting abilities.

Nerdfighter’s abilities spring from our best areas of knowledge, which enable us to come up with some conduit for our awesome to permeate the world and to participate in the improvement of it to decrease WorldSuck. (Example: Harry Potter Nerdfighters abound. Yes, that is a powerful area of knowledge lol. My best area of knowledge is biological sciences, hence, that’s the sort of NF that I am.)

Who is John Green?

John is the Michael L. Printz Award-winning author of Looking for Alaska and An Abundance of Katherines. His next book is called Paper Towns, coming later in 2008. (Young Adult lit.) You can find him at

Who is Hank Green?

Hank is the chief geek/editor of A site all about green technology. You can also find him here.

What is this Ning place?

Ning is a place where you can create online communities with users and profiles and blogs and pictures and videos, etc. It’s a little like Facebook and a little like MySpace. So, welcome to the Ning. =]

DFTBA = Don't Forget To Be Awesome.

Other quirks

My Pants: it’s the name of the forum. It is also a game. The game is to add “my pants” to the title of any book and to make it sound very very funny. Example: “Everything that Rises Must Converge... in my pants.”

EVO: This stands for Evil Baby Orphanage… a place where evil babies would be placed in an attempt to decrease the amount of suck they brought to the world. Think along the lines of Hitler.

... and many more.
Hope this helps a bit.
