ANOTHER DINNER PARTY - A FEMINIST ART PROJECT

So I got another camera and can take photos again!! Yay!!

I discovered something in a drawer the other day that I had forgotten about. It was an art project I did about 8 years ago. It was inspired by Judy Chicago's "Dinner Party" of the '80s. Dinner Party I was sick in bed for about a week and I pasted up a bunch of paper plates with images I'd been collecting from magazines. They were all images that I'd found had contributed and continue to contribute to our society's screwed up view of women. They were culled from Vogue, Bazaar & high end dream house magazines. I'd also been collecting "captions." So I collaged up these paper plates, dinner size & salad size and bought some clear glass plates to lay over the top of them (so we could actually eat off of them) and invited some women friends to a Dinner Party. I had a pink tablecloth & napkins and a large party store hula girl hung on the front door.

There was much hilarity and much groaning and much discussion and much drinking and a good time was had by all. A friend that was about 75 years old at that time said, "These are really depressing." I said, "Don't shoot the messenger. I'm just an unbiased reporter." :-)

I've just taken photos of them all and I'll put them here. The smooth edged ones are the big plates and the rippled edged ones are the salad plates.

And the first roses one - with her boob sticking out of the roses. Imagine the male equivalent. :-)

No, none are mine. They are all yanked from the mags. The first one particularly enraged me. It's from an expensive decorating magazine. Advertising china. Dinnerware. WTF? Think of some equivalent ads featuring men. You have to really use your imagination because there aren't any. Tools substituted for men's body parts? I can think of a bunch that make me laugh but how come this is OK? Jeeze.

OH MY GOD!! I can't believe I missed this!!! These are ~amaaaazing~ Deb!! What a brilliant idea, brilliantly executed. Is the sketch one yours? I love the one of the woman with the roses, the second one, with the standing in front of the mirror thinking "is that all there is?" quote - that was fantastic. All of them are!

Thanks for sharing!!

if i ever live in manhattan, i will never leave. honest. ever again. i love it there. It was my big bad scary anxiety city. i said i would never be able to go because my anxiety was SO bad and the city is so big and scary busy. then, once i started to conquer the anxiety, it became a challenge for me. I went in April 2003 and fell in love with it. Then back in October and then November 2003 as well. Yah. I loved it. I felt like I could actually BE who I wanted to be there. The last time, in November, I met a guy who was originally from Ottawa in a bar in the meatpacking district. He couldn't be gay here he said, so he moved to NYC, has an awesome career and is happy. He just grew up in the same town as me. Weird. Strange... Anyway... NYC. sigh. i can cry if i think about it too hard.
Hair, damn hair. I actually DID my hair today for work! yay work! No jammie pants either! It was fun - for a first day crazy chaos open-office-concept type of day. There is a shelf behind where I temporarily sit that has tonnes of movies on it. To borrow. The fist season of Six Feet Under is there. Cool. Filmgeeks to the left, Filmnerds to the right! Awesome!
