I can't wait for the end of the school year, I have to start this now. I have devised the idea for a project for the summer. Everyone gets a bit bored during the summer, right? So through the positive feedback I got from PotP, I have created this: The Ultimate Sophomore 100. Let's break it down.

The Ultimate Sophomore 100

Description: A challenge to write 100 short drabbels about anything and everything. Readers may or may not suggest topics but any and every topic requested will be written. At the end of the summer, we can say we actually read during the break (or in my case, wrote) and feel that we didn't completely waste it eating pizza, going to camp and playing Guitar Hero III.

Purpose: To combat boredom and a way to convert my Freshman creativity into new Sophomore Creativity. Hence, the title.

What's a drabbel? : In definition from UrbanDictionary.com, is:

A short piece of writing (usually fanfiction but sometimes original), usually no more than a 1000 words (although length is debatable) and often not bearing any real direction or plot. Drabbles are more often used to make a point about the characters or events involved, or to provide an introspection or specific point of view.

Rules ( all rules are subject to change slightly):

1. No less than 300 words and no more than 2000. It sounds like a lot, but the first drabbel is 338. I'll try to make them on the shorter side, because I know you don't want to read a hundred 2000 word drabbels.

2. Reader Request before Writer's Choice, always. What can I say, positive feed back is my anti-drug.

3. When I say everything, I mean everything. If you do something dumb like cheat on my one of my best friends, or act rude or are generally mean, I will and can write about it, though I'll try to censor out names when, and if, I see it fit. *Waves around artistic license)

4. No flaming please and thank you. It's not nice and this is all for funsies.

5. The Challenge will start on May 18 2008 and close on September 1st 2008. I know I know, you're all like, "But summer will be over!" Get over it. Much like the first real day to wear plaid, September first is symbolic of the first day of the month fall is continued to begin in.

And let the games begin!

Challenge: The Ultimate Sophomore 100

Drabbel Number : 1

Prompt: Drops of water.

As the day was winding down, one gloriously beautiful Sunday in late May, I went out in my flip-flops and began to fill up our dogs's water dish. The dish, in actuality, is a small blue sled. As I filed up the pool, I began to think of a certain quote from T.H. White's famous Arthurian novel, The Once and Future king. As the Old King Arthur is entering his last days on earth, the brilliant English author starts a metaphor about human lives being drops of water in an ocean. I ponder his as the clear water shoots out of my five setting nozzle. I grimace as cold water splashes out, as the nozzle is currently set on FLAT, which is the best for flower watering. I switch it to MIST with the flick of the wrist. While waiting for the bowl to do its job and hold the correct amount of water, I think of every drop as it hits the bowl. That one is an accountant, that one a lawyer, a doctor, a chef, a librarian, a minister, a scientist, a musician, ect. ect. I think of other things to, and give the droplets more stature and importance. Now that one is the President of the US, that one is the Prime Minister, That one is that one celebrity that adopts all the babies and kisses her immediate family inappropriately. My thoughts take a turn into a darker array of famous droplets. That one is a gang leader, and that one is a drug lord and that one is a Nazi whose killed millions. Unfortunately at this point my dog barks, I jump and half the water spills out. I sigh and continue on, thinking bitterly of how ironic the droplets spilling out at the thought of them dying. I can almost hear their tiny shrieks of pain as they fall to the hot burning sidewalk below. Stupid Holocaust. I hate it when I am right.
