"Ouch." That was the first word that ran through my mind today as a massive school bus (think Greyhound-type bus) was backing into the right front corner of my parked little Toyota...with me still in it. The second and third words that went through my mind I can't mention here for risk of offending our younger audience. So here's how part of my day turned into suck.
As is my daily lunchtime custom, I had parked my car (today, in the fairly-empty parking lot of our local air & space museum) under the nearest bit of shade that I could find, whilst I proceeded to eat a sandwich and read a bit (I've just started The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon). I had just finished off two measly bites of my lunch when I happened to catch some movement out of my periphery. I glanced up just in time to see the huge ass of a bus as it was crunching and creaking it's way into the front of my poor car. My engine was off, so I didn't have time to flip it into reverse and skirt out of the way, so I just pounded on my horn as long and loud as I could. Thankfully, this had the desired effect (either that, or the driver just eventually noticed that he was RUNNING OVER A CAR!). Ugh.
Seriously, in the split second that it took all of this to happen, I couldn't stop picturing that scene from Star Wars where Luke and the gang are trapped in the trash compactor and the walls are slowly closing in, threatening to crush them all to death. Yeah...that's all I could think of...that's it. I'm such a dork.
So, I got to spend the rest of my lunch hour filling out a police report, calling my insurance company, and trying to reassure the bus driver that he shouldn't feel so bad, that stuff like this happens, that it could have been worse, etc., etc., etc. (poor guy...he really felt bad).
But, alas, the damage really isn't that bad. And, at least something happened today that's interesting enough to write about. That's good, I guess.
