I mean, I'd agree that it's lame when authors go completely changing the rules mid-way through, but I don't think the lines between the genres are quite so hard and fast. Admittedly, "hard" sci-fi should just stay hard--please no one make a dirty joke out of that--but really I think it's chill in, say, Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson when there's fairly hard sci-fi with a few fantasy kinks thrown in... In that example, elements of Sumerian myth. (Though those elements in Snow Crash are sort of still framed in a sci-fi way? I don't want to throw in any spoilers, but the point remains...)
