Nerdfighters

...with the windchill. I just wanted to say it...-50C. Now that's cold...bitter, crushing, merciless cold. It makes each breath catch painfully in your lungs. It makes your eyelashes freeze together. It makes your bones ache and your toes and fingers numb within minutes, no matter how warmly you are bundled up. All of the children will be kept inside at recess and at lunch, because it is just too dangerous to play outside. Heaven forbid a scarf should slip down or a mitt get lost, at these temperatures frostbite, or worse, would be the swift result.

I love winter and I love snow (there's 5 foot snowbanks on either side of my driveway!), but when the temperature plummets this low and the wind blows, our city becomes a hostile, desolate place. Beautiful though, the sky is pale and crystalline, the landscape covered with swirls and mounds of shadow and sparkle...but it is utterly unforgiving.

If you're the praying type, send one up for the homeless in Winnipeg tonight.

Ditto. Definitely having Obama envy.

But it's only -9C here right now. That's practically like picnic weather after last week!

ah winterpeg, making my gerdfriend all housebound, what up with that???

here in vancouiteria we are blanketed in gray womb of fog, very cold and still. we hardly ever get fog like this...growing up in newfoundland we had oodles of freezing rain, bitter cold and hunks of snow, but fog, fog was the norm. so i kinda like it, lol

stay well, my cold embitered friends. books and fireplaces seem like good plans.

oh Winterpeg, you always take the top cold prize. Poor you E!!! -50 is cold. I remember -57 in the early 90's. It was surreal, actually. Your description nailed it... I'm looking forward to reorganizing the basement storage/clutter area into something that resembles organization and fit in a workbench for the bub. I need to also get that studio/office under control. It's taken over again... So I'm ok with a few more weeks of winter - that's when I get all my crap done, so that when spring comes I can jump out into the gardens...

However...Ottawa is frozen up as well. This morning, -28 without the wind, -36 with the wind. And we are in our 5th week of an effing transit strike. No public transit. Yah. Traffic is rediculous, and today i had a windy walk (jog, run) from bub's building to mine (luckily, we own a car) in minus thirty-effing-six weather??!! I shouldn't complain, but as IF?!

As E said - say a little prayer for our homeless friends, they will need it.

Yup, when I picked L up for lunch, he informed me that we're colder than the south pole today. Yikes.

WOW, THAT'S COLD!! Here I was digging out the mittins and hats for tomorrow, it will be 28F here in Oklahoma. That must sound like a heat wave to you two. I love winter and it never seems to snow or get cold for anything but ice here. I will stop the complaning, at lest I can still go outside with out a coat today(51F).

Oh, I forgot to take a moment and let -50 sink in. - 50 C, that's -58 F for us southerners. Mighty darn cold.
We'll be seeing -30F wind chills if the wind keeps up, yikes. You win. Keep all flesh under wraps!
Stay inside for a day or two!

Thanks Mel. Awesome links!
They plowed and blocked us in with big chunks of ice the other day here too...not so fun. And yes, keeping warm and diverted to allay that cabin fever. I can't even think about Spring yet...it's just too far off yet, I'd just get depressed. But meanwhile there's 9th b-day parties to plan, art journals, books and movies and lots of work and/or rabbit holes to get lost down to pass the chilly time.
