Nerdfighters

So I've been working on a series of automatic moderation tools to put in the new chat, and I've come across an interesting dilemma. What actually needs to be filtered? And I'm not just on about words, here. There's also links, and topics, and phrases. The reason this is so difficult... Anyone? Well, in a nutshell, it's you lot. The average user. The people who speak in chat. You never really complain about anything until after preventive action has been taken.

A classic example of this would be when certain people get angsty, or spam the chat with profanities of varying degree. Though this is clearly a violation, nobody really says anything; from what I as a user see, it falls to the Chat Mods and Chat Ningmasters to deal with it before anyone mentions it.

Another example? TinyChat. I'm still not entirely sure exactly what happened there, but from what I'm told a link was spam-posted. Again, clearly a violation, but the only complaints registered were made against those who dealt with the issue.

But the big question is, what's my point here? What do I want? Well, I want you lot to speak up for yourselves. Make it known to myself or the other Ningmasters or Mods whenever something in chat bothers you. Help me build up an understanding of exactly what you do and don't like to see. Comment on this post. Link it to others. Do the whole Viral Social Networking thing and make these words known. I want to know what bothers you.

Once I have this information, I can cut down the unnecessary code from the New Chat, and add in anything I may have missed, and then I can let you guys loose on it to have a look, see how you like it. But only if I know what you want. So, go be Nerdfighters! Tell me when you encounter chat-related worldsuck! And be awesome!

I don't get on the chat. Should I?

So I really can't have an opinion one way or another. Sorry I'm not any help.

I've seen that the chat can get pretty unruly. But honestly, I think this would be better solved by having more moderators for it who don't all live in the same timezone. Filters just aren't comprehensive enough to really catch when something is bad.

I agree with the sentiment that automated moderation lacks the semantic understanding that human chat moderation provides. On the other hand, from what I understand, holding 'Enter' causes a post to be reposted, which seems to make it unnecessarily easy for spammers to spam, and honest mistakes to be made.

However, I agree wholeheartedly that moderators take undo flack over their attempts to keep the chat civil. I seriously enjoy a civil chat, but often am too shy to mention when people seem to be trying to monopolize the chat, or other chat practices that strike me as rude. I shall try to mention it more assiduously, for you Dan, always for you ;)

From my point of view, only the moderator can tell what should be said and what should not, and then do something about it, don't make any sort of pre-programed filter because they are really annoying and they just suck in general.
Even repeated messages should be allowed
Censorship is never a good idea, it might end up turning against those who didn't do anything wrong.

I know some words might seem adequate to be filtered, like "nigger" or "faggot", but even those shouldn't 1(ONE) because trolls can easily find multiple ways to say them such as nigga, n1gg4 or whatever, really, there are loads of ways of saying the same word and 2(TWO) It is possible that a discussion about the use of these terms comes out and then we won't be able to say anything because they are filtered

Tbh, I think the chat is just fine the way it is
