I straightened up my gi, and tied my black belt round my waist, finalising the knot.
I entered and bowed into the dojo and then bowed onto the mat, where my opponent and friend,Chris stood.
A few paces forward into the yellow square, a bow, and a flag down.
The time to put friendship aside had come. This was for the gold, the championship, the big award.
"Kaishi" Sensei Laman said.
I went straight on the offense. A quick testing snap punch. Chris dodged, from this I knew he was keeping
his weight on his rear foot. I snuck in a right roundhouse to send him onto his front foot. With his open side now bearing the weight, I took his arm and pulled him toward my body.
I saw Chris smile as I pulled. He dropped is weight to the floor and slid his legs round mine, pulling me down as well.
Still inside the yellow box, we scrambled on the floor, holding each other in head locks to restrain each other.
I put one foot to his ribs and turned rolling to the right. Chris landed on the bottom as I landed on top with him open.
I got up and walked back, giving my opponent time to recuperate, I was not ready to fight an un balanced fight yet.
We met back in the centre with an exchange of grabs and punches, chops and kicks.
I took a cheap shot with a snap kick to his right foot, then followed it with a front kick to his left thigh.
Chris stumbled backward.
