This is a Hooverville in either Tacoma, Seattle or Olympia. According to the what Google, Seattle, Olympia and Tacoma all called their Hoovervilles, Little Hollywood.  I have my doubts about this, but Olympia doesn't have a very good online archive for its history, and I haven't searched for Seattle because, damnit, I'm a Tacoma man.  Although I've found mostly evidence to support that if nowhere else, the Hooverville in Tacoma was called Little Hollywood, also Hollywood on the tides. It was basically built on the top of oyster shells from the Oyster plant near by.   According to some accounts people had gardens during the hay-day of the Great Depression. Even some were nicely painted and kept up with little fenced yards.

In the early 1940's city officials burnt Little Hollywood to the ground, or oyster bed, to make way for more industrial land. By this time there were some, but few, people living here. The vast majority of which were in their 60's.  While it wasn't the only shanty town in Tacoma, nor was it even the most famous.  It was probably the most visible.

I gotta say, I love little history tidbits like this.  I found this information while searching for a future animation project that is based on Tacoma.  While Little Hollywood won't play a large part in the animation, I wanted to throw some different levels of society in.

Well, that is the first Woody Guthrie song I have ever heard, so thanks for that :)

I have read The Grapes of Wrath, I've also read the book and listened to the Woody Guthrie song The Ballad of Tom Joad, based on the book.

The movie is great, the book is good, but the ending is a bit... Weird.
