Why Nerdfighteria is like Dumbledore’s Army (And why that matters)

Hello, my name is Emma Smet (nerdfigther, linguist, dyspraxic) and today, whilst re-watching ‘Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix’, I had a strange but important thought. That thought was: Nerdfigtheria, this beautiful and amazing land I have the absolute honor to be a tiny part of, is actually a lot like DA. Think about it. No, really, think about it. Similar to Nerdfighteria, DA was founded in the midst of a lot of (magical) worldsuck featuring Umbridge, Voldemort and the like. However, more importantly, DA was founded by a group of the most unlikely of friends who chose to stay together, who chose to stand up and fight (for awesome). The members of DA are essentially a collection of outcasts, underdogs who don’t belong anywhere and who, despite everything, find companionship, love and strength in one another. The same holds, in my opinion, for Nerdfighteria. Furthermore, like the members of DA, we too teach other how to fight. No, not all-powerful wizards but the people who bully and ostracize us, who think we are less than them just because we are different. Our dedication, like that of the members of DA, to each other and to the general increase of awesome is unwavering and unconditional. The only difference I could find is that Nerdfighteria, unlike DA, does not have one (strong) leader. According to me, in Nerdfighteria we all follow each other as we follow ourselves. Now, I know what you are thinking. However, you must admit that John and Hank are not our leaders. They are more like Dumbledore. They provide us with ideas, we are the ones who interpret them, who act on them. Finally, it seems to me that the essence of DA and Nerdfighteria, all other arguments aside, is the same. That essence is love. Love for nerdy things, love for a better tomorrow and most of all love for each other, for our best and most unlikely of friends.
