Carl Hiaasen explains the story of discovering the self-published book Eragon by Christopher (Chris) Paolini in an Albertson's in Montana. Carl Hiaasen famously gave Eragon to his son to read on a family trip, and his son loved the book. So Carl Hiaasen suggested to his editor at Random House that she read Eragon by Chris Paolini (to that point, a self-published novel). Subsequently, Random House offered Chris Paolini a 500,000 dollar advance for his trilogy, the first book of which was Eragon.
