Non-English music

Can anyone recommend good bands that DON'T have English lyrics? I like to listen to music while I write, but if I understand the lyrics they often distract me too much. (Besides, I just really love small obscure bands :) )

If you like French music, try Jacques Brel or Camille, they rock!

Dir en Grey are Gods Among Men. I was going to recommend maybe some instrumentals.. Orion by Metallica comes to mind, can't really think of any others, but instrumentals rock socks.

I suppose it would depend on your music preferences. I like a lot of non-English bands. From Norway - Turdus Musicus (a bit heavy though). If you want relaxing, try Celtic like- Enya, Clannad, etc. I have around 300GB of music on a streaming server. The server is down at the moment due to remodeling. Message me if you want the link.

Does Turdus Musicus have any songs in Norwegian? everything I found was English. But they're neat! (Norway has some seriously amazing bands).
Celtic is, uh, really not my thing. It's supposed to be relaxing, but all it does to me is make me want to do is take the next heavy thing and chuck it at my stereo.

I have their last CD and it is in Norwegian. They put on a good show too. Try Hurra Torpedo for some very interresting Norwegian appliance rock. Once I get my office back in order, I will host a live Non-English show with call in. I'll let you know when that will be. I think We have similar taste in music.

Hurra Torpedo looks fun! Lovely, lovely insane Norwegians. I'm just starting to get familiar with its music scene (starting from the ever wonderful Kaizers Orchestra to their side projects (Cloroform, Skambankt...), to their myspace friends etc.).

I've been listening to Kaizers Orchestra, and I think I'm in love with their music *laughs* They are amazing!

Another good non-English band to listen to while using the ole noodle would be Icaland's - Sigur Ros. It's very hypnotic melodies will allow your mind to run like washing new red undies in a load of whites.

they're already sitting on my CD shelf :) (and obviously have the immense benefit that no matter how many languages I'll learn, their songs still won't have distracting lyrics)

The musician Enya makes tons of songs in other languages. She even does songs in more than one language, for example, her song Pax Deorum has latin and gaelic at the same time! She's done songs in Latin, Gaelic, French, Spanish, and Japanese to name a few. She also does purely instrumentals. Oh! She did some songs in Elvish for the first Lord of the Rings movie. Check her out, she's super soothing.

I don't know what it is about her, but the effect of Enya on me is the exact opposite of soothing :D
