Broadway’s Not Stale, So Why Are the Tonys?

This year’s telecast seemed desperate to erase distinctions between the nominated shows and the (often justly) overlooked, between seasons present and past.

The Tonys Spread the Glory Around

Reflecting an eclectic Broadway season, the 62nd Annual Tony Awards decided to spread around the goodies.

A Mother Whose Life Song Is About Tenement Nightmares, Not Broadway Dreams

Theatergoers who are truly passionate about the history and development of the musical will want to take advantage of the fleeting return of “Juno” to New York.

Curtain Up! It’s Patti’s Turn at ‘Gypsy’

Patti LuPone has found her focus as a dangerously obsessed Momma Rose in a wallop-packing revival of “Gypsy.”

The Ballad of Johnny Depp

When Johnny Depp was announced for the title role, and especially when Helena Bonham Carter was announced for Mrs. Lovett, “Sweeney Todd” purists groaned.

Patti’s Turn, if Not Always Rose’s

Patti LuPone’s arrival in New York in the guise of the lovable monster Momma Rose in “Gypsy” was the galvanizing event of the summer.

What Ever Happened to Momma Rose?

If any actress of her generation seemed fated to play the juggernaut of a stage mother in the musical “Gypsy,” it was Patti LuPone, the juggernaut of a Broadway star.

Let Her Entertain You. Please!

The drama of how Patti LuPone finally got to star as Rose in a New York production of “Gypsy” is almost a musical in itself.

Crazy for Theater, Even When It Sizzles

City Center, Symphony Space and two small theater companies are broadening the concept of summer-stock-in-the-city.

Sin City: Morally Bankrupt, but Musical

“Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny” is the most ambitious product of the collaboration between Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. It is also the hardest of their works to pull off.

Broadway Babies Give a Grand Old Lady a Hand

For Patti LuPone and Audra McDonald, new gigs in the world of opera.

A Soprano So Sure She Can Caterwaul

Ms. McDonald's willingness to go for broke is what sets her apart from other operatically trained singers who venture into pop.

Patti LuPone in ‘Gypsy’: Light the Lights, Boys! Mama Rose Hears a Symphony

Ms. LuPone sang with exciting power and warmth in this production at the Ravinia Festival, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra played with a clarity that made you take notice.

Grand Broadway Voices, Yours for a Song

It is both the best and worst of times for theater music on and off Broadway.

When Chemistry Works, Don't Ask for a Formula

Chemistry in any show is not something you can nail down. But this season presents at least three stage duos widely considered to be electric.

Profile

What Kind of Nerdfighter Are You?
I am a Musical-theatre, Film, Literature, LuPone/Sondheim, Theatre, YouTube, Doctor Who, HARRY POTTER Nerdfighter
About Me:
I am peculiar. I can make nearly any person laugh (or cry, for that matter). I'm really meticulous about speaking and writing correctly (I can't even "txt tlk" without driving myself crazy) and get annoying about it sometimes, but I think I'm okay with that. I tend to use overly dramatic vocabulary. MUSICAL THEATRE IS MY PASSION. I enjoy reading A LOT, listening to slightly obscure music, watching films no one seems to ever had heard of, and singing every showtune ever recorded. I obsess about the things I love. I've read each Harry Potter book over 93 times and have finished the complete works of Shakespeare and Jane Austen (Not just the major novels, I've read everything ). I adore all things UK. I don't really like a lot of company unless I have some sort of audience. I'm a bit lacking in the whole "outwardly expressing emotions" thing except when onstage. I'm madly in love with a man named John Green.

Favorite Books
All seven Harry Potter books, Looking For Alaska, The Remains of the Day, Sense and Sensibility, Howards End, A Room with a View, The Gun Seller, The Class, The Actor and the Target, Evita by Evita, Side Effects, Twilight, Candide, An Abundance of Katherines, Evita: The Real Life of Eva Perón, 13 Little Blue Envelopes

Where's Your Nerdfighter Song?

I was just watching the recorded version of the live Hank chat from BlogTV, and he brought up the Nerdfighter Song. Anyone who has watched the earlier Brotherhood 2.0 videos knows that writing your own Nerdfighter Song is how you became a part of Nerdfighteria, how you were initiated. Continue

Patti Mail

This morning was just like any other summer, Monday morning. I wake up at 7am (yes, I'm insane, okay), wash my face, brush my teeth, and quietly tiptoe through the house to the computer room. Usually, I go on the computer to check anything that I missed last night while I sleeping. Most of the time, I'll have just one or two new e-mails about comments and such. This morning, I checked the first of my e-mail addresses and found two new messages. "You have a new comment on your page on Nerdfighte… Continue

Patti LuPone, You Made Me Cry.

Last night, was, honestly, the best night of my life. Well, I experienced, at the very least, the best four minutes of my life. Everything preceding those four minutes, was excruciating and seemingly unnecessary at the time (except for the performance by the prinicpals of Gypsy, Benanti and Gaines winning their Tonys, Sondheim's Lifetime Achievement Award, and Mandy Patinkin, of course). The following video recollects those four minutes (and a bit): Continue

PATTI AND STEVE ARE GETTING 2008 TONY AWARDS!

I Found Pimp Surveys!

So, I was wandering about the internet, as I usually do on a Thursday night (and every other night for that matter) and found this fabulous surveys website, www.pimpsurveys.com. Obviously, I obsessed and took, basically, every survey that was on the site. I decided to post one of them here. This isn't a cool blog; it's not even a good one. It's just a survey. :] …

This is My First Blog...and I am Livid.

Okay, I have just written my very first blog. It was perfect. It was engaging, entertaining, grammatically-correct, and NOT SAVED AS A DRAFT. You see, once I finished writing this exceptional blog, I clicked the button reading "Publish Post" on the lower right of the screen, as any normal person would have done, to finally get my name as a blogger out there, on the internet, in the Nerdfighter Ning I love so dearly, for everyone to read. The awaited moment had arrived. The timing was perfect. I… Continue

I'm very well, actually. Slightly hungry at the moment, but that will soon be rectified by means of a delightful dish of Chinese origin.

The weather is quite splendid, which is sickening, frankly. Why is there always something so inane about a fine day? Admittedly, it is a glorious change from the constant drizzle which we have had to endure, but cloudless skies are uninteresting to me.

My God, I sound so grumpy. Right:

Today is beautiful and I am happy.

There.

By the way, I watched Sweeney Todd the other day and was astounded by Sondheim's writing (not so much by the singing, though, although it was fascinating to hear Alan Rickman's singing voice).

You will be delighted to hear that I am typing this on my own laptop, at my own desk, in my own study, in my own house (sort of), and in my own trousers. At last, at long bloody last, I am back.

Happy dance, anyone?

What to do? . . . What to do? . . . Endless possibilities . . .
YouTube? No, I think I'll stay here for a while. :) Besides, I'm rather dreading going over to YouTube, where I know many hundreds of videos will be waiting for me to watch them.

I am dearly looking forward to your blog post (as ever).

Wild torrents of ♥,

Adam.

A response would be marvellous, yes.

(I wrote in the punishment blog [very quickly] that I would be writing a response soon, and not to worry, but I was mistaken.)

And you're right: this has been wonderful publicity. :)
Still no John or Hank, though . . .

Thank you for your offer to expound the events of fiveawesomegirls, but I'll wait until I can watch them all in sequence (our internet shall be working again in the next few days [hopefully]).

(Why on Earth have I been using the word 'expound' so much lately? [And what's with all these parentheses, for God's sake? It's unnecessary]).

Much much much much ♥,

Adam
