"for example, would a band nerd from new york side with the band nerds, or the regional group? scary thought"
It doesn't really work like that. Most of the time, they act differently relative to the group they are with. Its like hanging out with your parents and hanging out with your friends. You might talk and act differently around each but that doesn't mean that they are in conflict.
On the internet in general, they tend to gather in forum and blog communities and those communities take on an individual character. By gathering like-minded people together, each person acts more freely than they would in a more general group. That can include more freely ridiculing other people than they would in general.
I think that the Nerdfighters have gotten large enough that we have formed quite a few of these communities, though its hard to figure out how to distinguish them. The thread titles, discussion group, and person who made the blog post help a lot though, so people have some clues of what to avoid.
Also, sometimes people have been in other discussions or reading other articles and have developed a really strong opinion, such as on Twilight. When they restate the opinion here, they are remembering a ton of material and condensing it down to a single blog post or thread response. They think that the strong language is warranted, but they forget that not everyone has been part of those previous discussions and aren't ready for it.
It doesn't help that most of the Nerdfighters interact over the Internet. In person, you can get a lot of clues about how people will respond to teasing. On forums and social networks like this, people tend to form groups and that helps manage it.
Live Action Role Playing
They get ridiculed for taking it way too seriously. I think that the vampire / werewolf groups get it the worst because it mixes in with that subculture (dressing up and acting like vampires / werewolves) a lot more than doing Pen and Paper vampire / werewolf RPGs.
I've never done this and I don't even play that many Pen and Paper RPGs. I do know that the LARPers get heckled a lot for it.
And the relationship between Bella and Edward is so grim! They hardly ever smile! It might be because they are playing with death at every moment but still, crack a joke once and awhile! Though I'm not superficial outside my fictional life, I think Robby dear needs to go to the gym if he wants to compete with my Taylor.
lol.
