What Kind of Nerdfighter Are You?
Victorian Literature Nerdfighter
Favorite Books, Movies, Music, and more
There are too many to even begin to list, and yet I'll try:

Persuasion and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, everything by Agatha Christie, but especially Crocked House and the Tommy and Tuppence books, everything by George Eliot but especially Daniel Deronda and Middlemarch, The Thursday Next and Jack Spratt books by Jasper Fforde, The Solitaire Mystery by Jostein Gaarder, Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell, High Fidelity by Nick Hornby, the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman, everything by David Sedaris, I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith, Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell, To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis... and I know there are a criminally large amount more, but I have to do other more important things (like grocery shop) so this list will have to be representative for now.
What's your favorite thing to put on your head?
Old fashioned hats.
If you could do your happy dance with anyone who would it be with?
John Green- obviously. Also, I think Henry VIII and Abraham Lincoln, because can't you imagine them having truly hilarious happy dances?

BANF Suggestion!!!

Hey folks--

So, as I well know, there were an ABSURD number of us at the Boston Paper Towns event last night, and it was RIGHTEOUSLY AWESOME. And I am sure you all, like myself, are seriously thrilled that it happened and you got to attend and that even those of us who were wait-listed had the ability to be included thanks to Hank and Katherine and the lovely Miss Julia Nunes.

Reflecting on all this today, I had a brainwave-- we should write the clever, wonderful people who organized this even… Continue

Tagged am I...

So I've been tagged, TWICE, no less, and must now share 5 things about myself that none of you know- except for the people who actually know me. And, since it's Valentine's day, I'm going to share 5 things about my romantic life.

1. I have a weird superstitious way to predict whether or not a romantic pairing is going to work out for me. Regardless of whether I intend to marry the person or not, or even take my husband's name IF I ever get married, I always pair my first name and the guy's last… Continue

Indeed I have! I didn't say anything because I wanted to have a peek at the movie first. BAD IDEA. I was only five minutes into it, and I covered my face with my hands and started yelling "My eyes! MY EYES!". It is hard to say what is worst in this movie: That the people who made it learned to revise fairytales from Shrek, that the characters are all turned into vapid, flat figures, that Lucinda looks like one of thos girls that dance alongside rappers or that MANDY IS MINNIE DRIVER INSTEAD OF AN OLD LADY FOR GOODNESS SAKE!! When I first saw her I mistook her for Lucinda and thought she made a fine Lucinda, but when I realized the truth... O, and don't get me started on THE POP MUSIC!!!

But let's talk about things of importance, such as THE BOOK. I liked it a lot, it contains many interesting ideas and what I believe to be a good approach to fairy-tale revisionism. However, towards the end of the book I found that the plot weakens considerably, and the final chapter is decidedly rushed ("Ella is discovered! Run away, Ella! Where's Ella? The shoe fits! Marry me! I won't! zOMG I'm cured! I will! Happily ever after!"), and I was looking towards a more imaginative retribution for the mean characters (I found Hattie to be a rather fascinating villan!). But, in all, I thought it was a very well thought-out book, and it reminded me a lot of "The Little Princess", which I adore!

It's only half past seven where you are, but here I come chirping to wish you a happy weekend and share my reading of "Ella Enchanted" with you!

zOMG! I'm only on chapter nine, and this book is already making me tear at my hair in frustration! It always makes me so anxious when the characters wind up in those "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situations, I find that really nerve-wracking (in the good sense!). So far, it's being a great read, and I'm cursing myself for not having found it earlier! It would have made a fantastic object of study for my Universal Plots class in my first year of university.

Hooray! Let this be the beginning of a long friendship!

Does Ella's dad get any better after chapter three? Because I already hate him with a passion!

I'm certain I won't particularly like the movie, but I find it a great exercise to analyze how novels are adapted into scripts, and "Ella Enchanted" looks like a challenge in that respect (which apparently wasn't met too well). I'm just at the beginning, and I want to take it slow. There's this reading beast inside of me who wants to devour the whole thing before going to bed, but binge-reading never leaves me satisfied...

Would you find it unbecoming if I added you as a friend?

(past) margaret, I managed to get my hands on "Ella Enchanted" and started to read it right this afternoon (while I was supposed to be doing other, purportedly more important things), and I really like were it seems to be heading to. I look forward to finishing it and then watching the movie for comparison! Anne Hathaway seems sooo clichéd for the part, though...

(Past) Margaret does the best Cassandra Mortmain imitation ever! I am a enthusiastic web surfer and I like to click on links. At some point I came across thepierglass (I think you were bragging about being in the Globe in My Pants) (Wow, it even works for newspapers!), and made the connection.

Do you have a copy of "I Capture the Castle"? Dodie Smith is my new favorite author, since she inspired 101 Dalmatians. If she hadn't written these books, MoJo would've. I always thought Cruella de Vil looked like a zombie.

Has Maureen sent it to you already? Enjoy the Suite darkness!
