It was essentially just a slightly more severe flu (nausea, aching, fever, etc.). He went to the hospital because his spouse was worried, but they basically just gave him some antibiotics and put him on clear liquids, and he went home that day, recovering completely a few days later. I've no idea of the excessive symptoms you speak of, sorry.
